I'm not comfortable with sewing items to fidget mats because every separate beginning and end is a potential unravel (with determined fingers!) This has very small beads and elastic hair ties crocheted in as I went along. Other textures were created with chain loops. The only things added at the end were the curly bits and they were crocheted outwards from the mat as a base. This is not my best crochet but I quite enjoyed doing it and it kept me awake in front of the TV!

I like how you incorporated the fiddly bits and love the crinkly edge and the colours.
Using one hook and not at least two needles is nice when watching television or amusing yourself when hubby watches his favourite sports. I have been trying out different patterns in Tunisian crochet - gives a rather sturdy fabric, great for mats, but for clothing I prefer knitting.

I've experimented with Tunisian crochet, but I agree that it has limited uses.

This is truly awesome, Sue.......love what you have done and I think the yarnwork gives this a terrific texture for this type of project....well done!!
