It has certainly been a day for me. Our beautiful town of Knysna on the Garden Route in South Africa has been surrounded by fire. It has been impossible for our firefighters as we have had gale force winds for over 12 hours. This afternoon we had no electricity. Electricity back and although it is still very windy I think we are safe.

The other thing that has been on my mind is that Joshua is back here to have another operation. He has

to have a bit more taken off his already amputated leg.

His operation is tomorrow. The surgeon says that he will probably only be in overnight. I will keep you posted

UPDATE
No sleep, last night as the fire was raging near us. I thought we were going to be evacuated. I did a quick backup of my computer. Grabbed my embroidery machine. Packed passports and all personal papers and packed my best jewelry. We found out this morning that Cape Town had sent several more fire engines which had arrived over night. The wind dropped and we even have had a bit of rain. We are safe but I have three lots of friends who lost their homes last night . The houses were burnt to the ground. I am just so terribly sad. I think Josh is in theatre as I post. I am feeling emotionally drained.

Much going on - first, prayers for Joshua that all goes as expected. Then, you have my prayers for your fires. Florida had the same thing the last couple of months. At one time there were 140 non-controlled fires in florida - whew!

OH Sarah I had been thinking of you all day today after watching news reports last night, about the storms ravaging SA. I am so glad you are safe but very sad to hear about your friends and all the other damage and, worse still, the terrible loss of lives.

It is also disturbing that Josh needs further surgery on his leg, my prayers go out for a successful repair and speedy recovery and for strength to sustain all those unfortunate people who have to rebuild their lives.
huge hugs coming your way.

Terribly, terribly sad. The Cape Province really need all the support they can get. With the storms, the lack of water in Cape Town and now the fires in the South and East. We are going down in July and perhaps all that will be left of this ordeal would be the devastation. You are in our thoughts. Hopefully more unity

will be created by it.

My husband met up with two of our friends, where their house used to be. I just couldn't go. I will see Maureen next week. I have spoken to her and I do not think it has sunk in.

Last night I sat way past midnight reading all the tweets. To read about the fear of people from the other provinces about the safety of their loved ones. Terrible not knowing what was rumors and what was the truth. Every now and then I woke up my family to tell them the latest news. This was all we talked about today at the office, you are in our thoughts and I can see how everybody is organizing for help, be it food etc. I told my family how you started to get ready for evacuation. It imust have been so traumatic and knowing that your family today needed your support. You are for sure a family with a lot of strenght. Ypu deserve our admiration.

I can see why you are drained. The shock of the fires, then friends losing all their homes and possessions , all the while not knowing if you were going to make it through. So thankful you did! On the other hand, sad about all the ones that didn't. I know they are in shock and all of you need prayer.
Also, Josh has probably had his surgery so hopefully it was a sucess. Will his latest prosthesis still fit after this, as I know it's not been long he got it?

Thank you Toogie. Josh has had his op and wants to go home. He will be discharged tomorrow. I think once all is healed he will need a another cast made but yes, the old prothesis can be used.

Thank You for your update- Praying all is going smoother. Joshua is such a fighter I am hoping all goes smoothly and he can be up and back to fulfilling his hopes and dreams quickly. Prayers too for all the floods and fires that SA is experiencing and so grateful your home and possessions were spared as well as being able to be organized enough to get things together quickly, for if your evacuation was going to be necessary. It is so sad when people and irreplaceable possessions are lost. I hope everyone will take the time to think through about what they would need to get together if they went through something similar. So many forget medications or vital records, having copies of all the important papers at a back up location for if the banks or court house were to be damaged. Emergency preparedness is so important and though is a difficult thing to try to think about those situations and what and where we would go and how to diminish having the losses or the loosing of belongings, when we can have the records to be able to turn photocopies into insurances or other businesses it speeds up the process to get services or replacements of vital records or have those needed papers photocopied in a safe at a neighboring bank or loved ones home outside the area, then it can help get the rebuilding or paper work process underway. The Hurricane Katrina devastation and the struggles those in the area suffered and how many had no medication as it happened at the end of the month but then banks only able to give a small amt of money even when the person was the employer trying to get funds for his hundreds of employees. I just don't want to see anyone to go through a situation that is made even more difficult than if some additional emergency preparedness steps would have helped decrease the suffering and financial losses. I hope that those in the path of the SA floods and wild fires will have taken steps to help, by having an emergency plan for themselves and then I know the citizens will try to pull together to help friends and family who have lost so much. Heart felt love and concern for all. Pam
