The number automatically lowers when you open a message, you don't even have to answer it. #3 means three new messages and/or answers to old messages to read. The number disappears when you've opened all messages.

You may have answered but another reply may have happened after. There was one post where the person included a huge amount of people. If any one of them said something like "no" or "please remove me" it will be considered another post. Find the post that have a bold look. They should be on top. Click on them and the number should disappear. Hope this helps.

Sometimes, I just hit my F5 key and refresh the page after I've answered.
