UPDATE..... Call it being frugal or out of my mind.
My embroidery machine is gone for repair and I am AGAIN trying to make sense out of my fabric pieces. Somehow I feel the need to use as much as I can from the scraps. I came across this idea and thought to try it. Maybe it will show up in the future as a border of a small quilt. I am sure I will find a use for a scrappy jellyroll. Never thought that adding machine tape could be that useful.
Now a year later I found the perfect project to apply this for the border. Quilt is ready to be donated I think for the fire victims.

Make sure not to pick the carbon type. I wish you were closer. I have a box of 50.
There's a Staples in the nearest town that sells them in bags of 10. Only question I have: what width are yours?
the tape is 3" wide.
I bought mine at Walmart, ok of 2 for $3 something- only mine are just 2 1/4 inch wide-

What a great idea! Before we went away, I started a string quilt, in an effort to use some of my left over strips and bindings, can't wait to finish all the washing and ironing so I can get back to sewing!

Paper tape...used in adding machines. I use up my fabric bits this way to make sashings and borders for quilts...very colorful and I love my 'jelly rolls' of scraps. I'm planning one day to make an entire quilt of rows of these.
I just realized that with calculators etc nowadays, some may have never dealt with an adding machine requiring a tape. I am feeling old.
Haha no you not old I do remember adding machines and its a brilliant idea am going to try it out myself but must just find the rolls.....so its just paper not a sticky paper then.
Just plain paper roll. Office supply stores sell them and so does Amazone. No thermal
You can usually find the rolls in thrift shops. Piece of cake. Good idea!

This is something I would like to try. I am saving small strips from my blocks I cut now. Maybe a next project but I will have to get some of this tape you mention....Good job and bright thinking! Thanks for sharing!!!

After the aniiversary quilt?
That's right. I placed (not sewed) my pieces together yesterday, just to see how it would look. I find I need another row on the sides and bottom, more 'info' snowball blocks, so made some designs today to embroider. However, I just got one embroidered, before my sister and her guy came in.... The next 3 days we are carpentering
and then I keep Gus and Nora for two days. Ashley has to go to continuing ed classes to renew her PT license. Oh well, I do what I can when I can. We are working on a remodel of my niece's dining and kitchen.

Okay...I have done this with my scraps, but I am not sure why you need the tape? Color me confused...I just piece my scraps together....

I tried that but I wasn't always staying straight. This gives me a straight line and also easier to trim. Without the tape it just wasn't as neat.
What do you do with the paper after you trim?
Tear it off. once I am going to use it. Until then it stays on the paper.

No, my darling, you are brilliant! I love using these for borders and they make the most interesting binding, too. They also make wonderful strips in quilts that you have solid strips next to them. Think embroidery design tests on solid fabric.

If you look up "Chinese Coins" quilt patterns I think you would be able to adapt it to use your rolls. I recently did one with scraps that I probably would have thrown away a few years ago! I called it "off the floor" as most of them had landed there at one time or another. It made a nice quilt for our local infusion center.

I have done this too but I didn't have the machine tape so I just cut some strips of paper and used my scraps in a combination of angles and straight seams, whatever the shape of the scrap dictated. Then I used the strips along with some solids in a patchwork purse.

I am dealing mostly with scraps, since I use donated material I love the challenge and it keeps the cost down. It is costly enough paying for the backing and batting for the quilts I donate.

It was used mostly in adding machines and also older cash registers. It still is being sold in office supply stores.

When I first saw your post I had just started a roll. It is still rather small. I just made two 6m long lines of banners which made a dent in the 'larger scrap' bin. Seeing your update you inspired me to add the remnants of those leftovers to the tape instead of dumping it in another box.

It does sing, as Mops said. So proud you pursued this idea to such a wonderful conclusion. You are an inspiration. If you think you'll ever make another one, just play with the solid main color (grey) of your quilt to see what else appears!
Oh this border just ' made' the quilt. Love it and your random 9 patches! I also don't think about colors for a background so I usually go with white. I think the gray makes it look vintage in a way but the random blocks give it a modern look too. I wish I could find the old pink color fabric,for a new quilt, so it's looks old. I have one more twin size quilt to quilt before Christmas. Can't quilt today as I have Mason, Nora and Gus. I'm baking Snickerdoodles today for a 51 year old nephew's birthday and giving him a queen quilt. He will be surprised about the quilt! I usually make his cookies since his parents died because that's what his mom used to make. He always rather have Snickerdoodles instead of cake.... I still haven't looked for the paper tape. I wonder how much is on a roll and if you can buy just one?....how many rolls did you use for this border & what size is the quilt?.... Questions, questions, questions...I'm beginning to sound like my cousin that used to worry my mother to death with all her questions- lol
One roll of tape will last you for a long time. I am still on my first one. I doubt that you can buy only one and if you can not find it let me know. The quilt is a comfortable lap size. When i took the picture I placed it on a queen size bed. Did not take measurement. I try to make the quilts so they appeal to both sexes. Not always easy.

Want another frugal thing...take your small scraps and cut 1 1/2 " squares. Then make a postage stamp quilt. Also take the triangles from the flying geese or where ever you get them and sew them together. This can give you a 1 1/2" square to add to your postage stamp quilt. So far I have a project full of squares that I'm turning into 4 patches. Just remember you don't have to make a king size quilt. LOL Have fun quilting.

Thank you 😊 I am currently making 9 Patch from 1 1/2 " squares. Fortunately the design has some bigger pieces. It will be a long time before that will turn into a quilt. Working on it little at he time.

How about working on more than one strip at a time and then connecting the start of one to the end of another if you want one long strip? You would sew a piece to strip 1, then another to strip 2, 3, 4 or however many you want to without snipping the connecting threads (until you get several done), then cut apart and use. Hope this isn't too confusing.
You are right. I do it in pieces about 3 feet long and then attach to each other.

Ha, ha. I have a lifetime supply of those rolls. Ordered from Amazone and ended up with 50 rolls.
I leave the paper on till I am ready to use the roll. It tears of really easy.

regular default of my machine. I suppose a smaller length would make the paper tear away easier.

I am just amazed that I haven't commented on this great idea. I am surrounded by bits of fabric and its a great way of using the bits up. I had thought of sewing it to a backing of ribbon. I have a mountain of ribbon. I think we like to use as much of our stash as we can

I always feel a sense of satisfaction when I use up small pieces that others would throw away. A friend of mine always rescued usable bits of fabric from the garbage can.during a meeting with the quilting group

I just re-read all the comments. I read your tapes are 3 inch wide. I wish mine were! I found mine at Walmart called Calculator Paper Rolls were two in a pack but 2 1/4 inch so a seam on each side makes it 1 3/4 inch. It's a lot of work for such a small finish, in my case.
So Cuties check the tape measurement BEFORE you buy and get started.

I remove the tape just before I am ready to sew with it. I do not think it matters much. I like the roll to stay on tape till I am ready to use it.
It looks great. I sure have missed a lot. I saw yours Toogie and thought what the heck is calculator paper got to do with anything. Now I learned something. Great stitching hack.
