I need some assistance. I am making zip bags for my Pug Rescue Charity. I have just finished one only to find the nylon zip is sticking. It closes easily but sticks on opening. I always, without fail, zip and unzip a zip before I use it. DH suggested Vaseline but I am worried as it is so greasy. I know that lead pencil used to be used on metal zip teeth. Can anyone help me??

Hi Sarah, try rubbing some soap along the zip line! I've heard that that works well. Love Chris

My Mom used to do this every time she made a dress with a zip. I've done this on my zips on my bag when they get stuck. It must be dry soap. Hugs Maureen

Well, Sarah, Chris is correct...rubbing a zipper with soap is an option...also you are right about a graphite pencil, and so is your hubby with petroleum jelly...olive oil will work as well...Should not take very much of any of them...perhaps apply with a Q-Tip and run the zip back and fourth several times... Hope you get it worked out....

I always use a crayon. My boys are past that stage, but I keep a white one as part of my sewing room tools.

This won't help you now but another problem I have had with nylon zips that the can open easily.Close the zip up & pull the tape ends apart at the topend,some zips open up.I do this when buying loose zips or garments.The last thing you want is a zip opening up when wearing a garment out ,especially pants.

Is it the zip or is the fabric catching? Just check you might have to hand stitch a fraction of fabric back.

I have used bar of soap on zippers. try coating the teeth with a dry bar.
Nowadays most have liquid soap but I use bar soap too in my bath.

Just to say “thank you” for all the helpful tips. In the end I used silicone spray on a cotton bud. It has worked fairly well. I enclose a picture of the bag with its offending zip.
