Hi gals, it's been over a month since I wrote about Mum sorry I haven't been on here much.

Last Sunday she fell in her room at the nursing home and broke her hip. She wasn't in too much pain, but we didn't know she was actually in pain till Tuesday when we had to get a mobile x-ray person come in to x-ray her and that's when the staff realised she had broken her hip. So off to hospital Wednesday morning. I went in and had to wait nearly 2 hours before I could see her. I stayed there till 5.30 and came home. Thursday I was back there for 7 hours and they said she would be operated on, so she had been fasting and I left again at 5.30. At 6.36 that night I got a call saying that they weren't going to operate till Friday! I was very disappointed, as was Mum, I am sure. She got to have dinner at least.

Anyway, she was operated on Friday about lunchtime and I was waiting when she came back into her room. Sh wasn't too happy as there were 3 men in with her - all with broken hips and with Dementia! It was interesting listening to them! he he he!!!

Mum doesn't remember how she fell and says that she hasn't got a broken hip. I asked her to put her hand alongside her left hip and then she grimaces, but still says she doesn't have a broken hip. She has actually had a Hemiarthroplasty (check it out on the internet).

The staff have lowered her bed, put in an air mattress (automatic which has individual pockets that change tension, there are crash mats either side of her bed and motion sensors. One of the surgeons rang me on Wednesday to ask if I would give permission for her to go onto Aspro for 6 weeks due to her 2nd brain bleed, I of course said yes.

She looked dreadful on Friday and I said I'd wash her hair and put on some makeup for her on Saturday. Ben (our son) and his partner Mia came into see Mum and he took lots of pictures. She still rejects the idea that she has broken her hip and kept telling us so. In the end we just didn't mention it

She is sleeping a lot and the staff at the nursing home have yet to get her walking. She has stood up with the aid of a high walking frame and it's going to be hard for her to rehabilitate as she doesn't understand any directions now. It's just so sad watching her deteriorate. Anyway, I go in 3 times a week now and try to get her to eat something, she has lost a lot of weight, but is on Ensure to give her an appetite. That comes and goes too, some days she will eat really well, then others not so much. I'll continue to go as long as I can. Love Chris

Picture of her once hair and makeup was done. Ben was making us laugh. You can see how much weight she has lost in her arms and shoulders.

Hi Caroline, thanks, yes I'm doing well. I was meant to go see my Radiation Oncologist on Friday but she had to cancel due to a conference she was attending. With us going away next Friday for about 10 days and then her going on holidays we've rescheduled for the 18th August.
Mum is being well cared for and is in bed a lot resting and they get her up on the high walker to move her and then into a wheelchair. She isn't happy, but at least she's getting 24 hour care. Love Chris

So sad to hear this, Chris...I must say this is a very nice picture of you and your Mum...falling is one of the greatest risks for seniors...

Thanks so much Kim, yes, falling is very dangerous at any age and everyone says that we take a good picture. I tell Mum she looks great (when I do her hair and makeup) and so do all the nurses and she says "No, I'm not". She gets embarrassed when getting a compliment! I'm lucky in that my hair is great and easy to do. Love Chris

Thanks dear Sarah, me too! I'm trying to relax a bit more these days. Only going in to see Mum 3 times a week greatly reduces my stress level! Love Chris

Thanks so much Dlonna, I try and do Mum's hair every time I go in. The nurses try, but they never do it like Mum likes. Love Chris

Oh my goodness Chris.....hate to hear of your Mum's continuing health issues, as if she hasn't had enough to contend with and you have had your own issues to continue dealing with as well. Amazing to see smiles on both your faces despite the challenges!! Much love!

Thanks Vicki, Ben was cracking jokes and trying to get Mum to laugh and look at the phone. She doesn't realise that we take pictures on it, the expression doesn't change much. I'm doing well thanks, love Chris

Thanks Shirley, it's a time thing unfortunately and she has to do physio daily. I've seen her stand up on the high walker and she grimaced a little, but did it. She just has to keep it up. Love Chris

Hi Laura, yes, I know that I'm doing as much as I can. Meg has been a tower of strength and my oldest friend Sue has also been a great sounding board. Some days I cry with Mum and others I have to laugh at her responses.

The nurses are wonderful and she has a favourite called Annette. She actually reminds me of myself as a younger woman and maybe that brings a memory back for Mum. Love Chris

Oh dear Chris, Sorry about what happened to your Mum. Hopefully she is in no pain. As you know I have gone through similar things with my sister. I visit her 2 or 3 times a week. My heart goes out to you and your family as you deal with this awful disease. Mum and you look beautiful! Sending hugs and love, Suzanna

So good to hear from you. I’m glad Ben and Mia visit too. I really am sorry your mom broke her hip and so sad she doesn’t understand. I was told a lady went to see her mom this week that has Alzheimer’s. Her mom was so ‘out of it’ that the lady left crying. It’s hard for people to see their loved ones so confused. It’s so good to see you laugh, even though we don’t hear you.-lol- it’s such a good way to release tension. Best wishes to you and your family always. ❤️Toogie

Hi Toogie, yes, it was good to laugh and being in that room with the 3 old men, there were some funny comments!!! Mum can be a little bit "in your face" if you know what I mean and can speak out her thoughts loudly!!!! he he he, love Chris

Hi Mary, thanks it's been a rough time these past few months. Mum is in a wheelchair and moves up and down the corridors with her feet. She is standing up with help from the nurses, the Physio told me today that she will be up and walking well by the end of next week - we hope. She is a fighter! We put her little stuffed dog "Miss Lily
in her walker and she loves to take her for a walk. Love Chris
