Maybe a bit late for your shopping trip, but this is a great tutorial on embroidering using different types of paper.

You can embroider straight on to good card stock. You don't hoop the card. You can use iron-on stabilizer, hoop it and then with a warm iron gently press the part of the card that you want to embroider onto it. Not all designs are suitable for this.Those that are too dense or are outlines cannot be used.
I did this one on card. It is a Sue Box design, and stitched out wonderfully. Ricky
