Hi, Claude! The Assumption is a Roman Catholic Holy Day here, many people go to Mass & celebrate Mother Mary's Assumption into Heaven, but it is not a day off work. The USA is a very "young" country by world standards, and since it was founded by many people avoiding religious persecutions in England, the strict separation of any church or religion from the State, or government, was written into our Constitution. Our "day off work" holidays have to do with celebrating our Presidents, leaders, Veterans, mostly things that have to do with the country itself, or very general beliefs & values common to all people. We are such a mix of religions & cultures that if we started celebrating all religious holidays, I think we'd have at least one day every week off! Now, I personally think that would be a *Good* thing, hee hee hee. Unfortunately, most companies don't see it that way. You enjoy your holiday, and the company of your daughter. How exciting it must be for your grandson to be working in Tahiti!! That sounds like such a wonderful, exotic place. yes we need more religious holidays here in us

It is not in the Netherlands, but I found out last year when going to my daughter in Belgium that it is there. Was at the tail end of an enormous traffic jam, everybody going to the coast, etc.

In Holland it is a religious day but we have to work like any other day. Enjoy the stay with your daughter in Lille.

I'm from California and it has always been a religious holiday only. Great when I went to Catholic School, always had the day off. Up here in Canada it is also a religious holiday and not celebrated by the masses.

well in Holland it isn't so enjoy your holliday in France !!!
