Do you have to change any settings or anything on your machine to do cross stitch? I haven't ever done any cross stitch before.

I don't have to on mine. I have an Esante. As far as I know your machine would just read it as Cross Stitich and stitch it.

No, it is not necesary. x-stitch is just a type os stitch just like there is satin stitch, zig zag, etc... It should stitch just fine
