No Mary, Basting stitch is a temporary, single stitch, quite long so that you can remove it later.
Blanket Stitch is what you see along the edge of some blankets you buy...
it is a stitch running along the outside edge of the material with a stitch coming into the material and back out again, in the same place, in between each straight stitch.

Looks like Meg got you answer, on some machine manuals they name it overcasting stitches or applique stitches. At least that is how they are named on my brother machine's manual *2U

you got your answer Mary, diagrams and videos are a little wrong, always work with the needle pointing towards you once it has gone through the fabric, this will help maintain a regular stitch
