I use Bernina Artista, I don't know how involved you want to get, this has 3 levels, no frills, good manipulation, and digitizing. I would reccommend you talk to your dealer who sold you your machine also and find out what the manufacturer reccommends for that particular machine, then start looking around and see what is comparable and look at pricing.

I have been told that SewWhatPro is an XLNT, cheaply priced program for anyone wishing to take control of their designs, they also make SewIcons to view your designs from within Windows Explorer.
You can download a trial version (from the first link below) and try before you buy.
My personal preference is Embird, slightly more expensive but still much cheaper than (Machine) Brand named software and so user friendly you will WANT to be using it every minute of the day. Also it is by far the best supported embroidery program available, the creators are brilliant to deal with and only charged $15 for their last full upgrade, (I paid $80 for my recipe file upgrade and it wasn't worth diddly!).
You can also download a 30 day trial before you buy of Embird and need only buy the segments (plug-ins) that suit what you want to do.
So if you download each one of these as free trials, you will have 60 days free use to experiment and see which you prefer.
They have certain limitations on the trial versions i.e. you may not be able to save some things you create.
