The best rule of thumb is that if a site gives away freebies and sells nothing they are probably making money on you some other way... They are usually getting money for for collecting your name and email address so they can SPAM you or sell your address to others.
The other thing to be wary of is sites giving away designs that have licensed art/images like Disney designs...those are almost always illegal too. If in doubt and a download is a 'zip' file right click and use whatever anti-virus/anti-spam ware (like Grisoft AVG-you can get a free trial and it is great!) program you have can scan the file before you open it!
I have been fussed at by some group managers for even mentioning nice sites like Cute and SICKs because they assume the worst. The 'bad guys' really ruin it for the nice people. This is really a shame because the owner here is really showing a great deal of kindness and generosity to her members by giving us 'samples' for free and I like to share that fact with others.
