Yes you do have to use different thread in the bobbin when doing embroidery. The bobbin thread is very fine compared to regular thread. You can purchase pre-wound bobbins all over and depending on the size your machine uses are easily attainable on ebay or in your fabric store. I usually buy my bobbins for aprox $24 for 100 and they last about a year (and I do a lot of embroidery!) You'll also need to make sure you only use embroidery threads for your top thread also. It's mostly trial and error with your own machine to see what works best for you. Welcome to the cute family you're gonna love it here!

HI and welcome to the cute family..... firstly im quite new well only got my machine 11 months ago and still learning.... bobbin thread is usually white or black so i have found so i use white for just about everything except dark colours or where you would like the same thread (embroidery)on the back of a design if it is going to be visable like a in the hoop design where the last part has a satin edge stitch or just a personal choice. when doing free standing lace designs i use the same colour thread top and bottom. hope this helps someone with more experience may come put it in better terms for you :) * to add to your boquet.

Bobbinfil is thinner then normal thread, so you don't have to refill your bobbins quite as often. Some machines do not like prewound bobbins, so just be aware of that. You can use other threads, such as overlocker threads, or Madeira Lana(which is a wool thread) on your machine. The overlocker thread looks great for FSL doilies.Makes them look like real crochet. You have to make sure you use the appropriate needles for these. For the Madeira Lana I use a needle for metallic thread, because the eye is larger. It is just a matter of experimenting with different threads. Some people even use the overlocking thread in their bobbin with no bad effect, except they need to refill their bobbins more often.

Welcome! You can use your embroidery thread in the bobbin. The reason I use bobbin thread is 1) I can get more bobbin thread on the bobbin and don't have to rewind frequently and 2) cost is less for bobbin thread. There are times, like on a fancy towel, I will use regular embroidery thread, because the back is going to show and I want it to be pretty, too.;)
