Darlene, thank you for asking your question - it isn't often that we get a question like this - but I believe that you would use double layers of WSS (the topping kind) on the top and the bottom - perhaps triple - I don't know about the thickness problem - but I have used it on a sweater and it worked out great for me - I have stretch it some - but not too much to allow for the stretch factor - good luck.

I have done knit sweaters. I use a cut away on the back and the water soluable (1 layer) on top. 2 would probably do very well. If you used a water soluable on the bottom like tear and wash or badgemaster I think that would work well too, but I did not do it. I used a#11 embrodery needle and had not problem. Good question, but I'm NO expert.

I'm no expert but I have done one 'beanie' or knit hat. I hooped cutaway stabilizer, pinned the hat to it, keeping it quite relaxed and stitched it. I just used my usual embroidery needle. A single layer of rinseaway on top would be good too, stops the stitches sinking in. Mine came out fine - now the other three children want one too :)

I have done these before, I find it works well if I stretch it just a bit, but not as much as it will be when worn, that seems to give me the best results when it is put on. I am a big fan of either spraying it to the bottom layer of stabilizer, or pinning it to help prevent the fabric bunching up under the design. As suggested below, definitely use some type of water soluble stabilizer on top. Good luck, hope it turns out perfectly!

We did knit hats when I worked at the embroidery store and we didn't hoop either. Pin hat to hooped tearaway, put wss on top and stitch as any other design. :) Good Luck:)

We do these at work all the time. We use heavy tearaway and spray adhesive or pin the cap to the stabilizer. Don't stretch it. Use Wss on top. Use a ballpoint needle and make sure you turn your design or hat so that the design is right side up when he wears it. Silly I know but easy to mess up if you don't think about it. Ask me how I know. Thank you all... I hooped the tearaway, put in a new needle laid the cap down and WSS on top. Then I embroidered the cuff. NO PROBLEM.. thanks, I have posted the picture of my happy husband in projects. "Embroidered Knit Cap" caption.
