I've done meandering with embroidery thread. Actually learned that over ten years ago at an embroidery do by the Dutch Quilt Guild. But it was not a project that was supposed to take a lot of wear and tear. So maybe others have different advice for you.

It can, but I only use it in the decorative parts, not for the actually holding the quilt sandwich together. There I only use 100% cotton. (Unless it will be something like a wall hanging and not used or washed frequently.)

Have to agree with all the other answers....It reminded me of the time my mom used serger thread to piece a quilt top.....fortunatly we caught her at it before she quilted...Showed her how easily it pulled apart and she redid ALL the squares that were done:)

I have used it for stippling, when I wanted a zippy look. and the quilt has been used for several years, and washed lots!! That being said, if I wanted to keep it for an heirloom, the cotton would be the better choice for sure. Longer- lasting, and more traditional.
