HELP: Could someone please explain to me about embroidery fees. How do you include your cost in the item? Is it per design, thread, etc. I think I am coming up short on my purses...ummmm TIA ;)

Some one earlier had a good post on charging for designs. I think the going rate is $10 for a monogram or name on an item. Also, a dollar per 1000 stitches. No one will pay that so I try to keep the stitch count low if possible. I seems my time is worth "nothing". Many years ago, I refused to to alterations for friends because I told them they couldn't afford me as to my time involved. I consider myself slow but good and no one seems to want to pay for quality. I sew for fun and for my daughter and granddaughters. I've been selling a few TP covers at my hair dresser's beauty shop. I'll keep her happy with Elvis and angel designs.

That is why I am doing TP covers. I buy the felt in the remnant bin and Velcro at Joanne's and buy cello bags and craft ribbon at Michael's. I first priced them at $8 and didn't sell any, then changed the price to $6 and am doing well.

Monica, first off - what are you charging - if you don't mind sharing that with us? A sewing project such as your purse is a bit different than an embroidery only project - do your purses also have embroidery work on them - besides the making of them? Your time is worth what to you - how much do you get paid per hour for your work - at work - do you think you can get paid that per hour for the sewing project? Most will not pay it - but believe me - you set your fees to what you believe the project is worth - make it a good amount for you - if it sells at that price more than once or twice and you are getting what you want - then no worries - I always try for $8-12 per hooping for my work - a bit more for a dense or FSL project - all the materials are included in this for regular embroidery work - if I have an item that I am stitching on - I have to charge accordingly for that item as well. Thanks Shirlene. When I started a few wks ago. I had only plain purses in mind. I sell them for $25 and now that I have done some embroider to other bags I want to sell them for $35. Also, when I am doing bags the Lord may lead me to do something total different. For example: my last bag in the project area, I made a keychain out of some of the denim and added some embroidery ;) *2U I hope this makes sense :0
Good - it sounds like you are doing what you should - by raising the price as per what you do to them - I like the key chain and mentioned it in your post - wanting to know how your did it. It make perfect sense - thanks.

Hi Monica, I charge $5 for 5cm hoop, $8.00 for 12cm hoop, $10up depending on design for large hoop. Then if it is going on an item i am making or purchased i charge for the materials, them double it. For instance I made my SIL a bag for her friend for christmas(it's in projects now tag Ted's bag)$14 for material $8 embroidery $5 printing of the dog picture =$27x2= $54 in total. She loved it because you can't buy a personal one in the stores.Hope this helps, this is in Australian dollars. Louise.
