Do your homework. Go to the stores and sew on one. What kind of backup do you get from the dealer? Lessons? Check out sites with reviews. I have the Viking Diamond & do like it! But was able to get a "deal" on one used for 3 days at a conference. Does it recognize all formates or just their own? But either way or brand, save your pennies! They are costly. BUT ask any golfer just how much they spend yearly on golf (fees, club, etc) and you will find our sewing hobby is not out of line with any other hobby!!! At least our machine lasts years!

they can be from $ 1000, all the way up too 10,000... I have a Designer Diamond from Viking.. It can embroidery up to 13" x 12.5" I Love it... Sam :)

As each of the others have stated - $1000 and up - test them out - you will get a feel for them - ask your embroidery friends what they have - they will be very happy to tell you which machine they have and way.

Yes, they vary a good deal in price depending upon the features that you get. By all means compare and try out. I have the Designer SE and love it but would like to have the long arm of the Diamond. The thing I like most is the USB connectivity to my computer. I get the designs directly from the computer- no disk or cards to deal with!

Another idea Monica is to check with local dealers... since Viking, Bernina, Baby Lock and Brother (to name a few) have come out with new models, people trade their machines in... my dealer is selling Elegante 2s for 2500-3500. Ask any BL owner and they probably spent twice that on their machine... some dealers will offer 1 year full coverage warranties, or you can sometimes get a new warranty out of them if you promise to take the machine back to their dealership for servicing..that's what happened with my Singer XL6000.

Check out the Janome 350E, the color screen was one of the upgrades from the 300E. It's an embroidery-only machine, and I think is less than $1000. Make sure you check with the dealer for trade-ins & class used machines for a better deal. And make sure whatever you do, that you have a great dealer behind you for lessons, help, etc. I'd be lost without my dealer, Ann & Rick at Super Stitch are the best dealers I've ever heard of!!
