My husband and I have decided to become foster parents. The children are the real troubled mentally and physically abused kids. We just spent 16 hours of our first of many class trainings this weekend. We spent it with 5 different foster care givers learning what and how they deal with the children they receive. The horror stories we heard about some of the children made your guts cringe. Your tears about some of the abuse were ouring out to these children and teens. ONE OF THE STORIES was of a little boy, 4 years old, who was brought to the hospital (BY HIS MOTHER). she had kicked him across the room in the stomach. When the little boy was able to speack, he said I'M OK, PLEASE HELP MY SISSIES. The police returned to the home to find 3 little girls hanging in a closet on clothes hangers.

all little girls were shaved, stomaches were extended way beyond from lack of nutrition, they were covered with parasites.
Neither of the 2 girls could speak any words at all. they were 6 and 3. The little boy was aloud to be out because the family was only aloud 2 children in the apartment complex. They happened to be living next to the landlord and kept them there for the entire lives of the girls. This was a meth home.... The last speaker was speaking of the two girls she received. She has since adopted these two now 18 and almost 16. The oldest is in college to become a child advocate lawyer . The Lord has blessed these 2 with a loving caring religious family. They will never forget, but they have been shown not all humanity is bad. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN to even the slightest thing and your ears wide for the slightest suggested plea even if heard from a third party. If it doesn't sound right turn it in anomyously. You could save a child without knowing you helped. This is only one of the many we heard. It is all around us, but we as people in general tend to tune it out because we do not want to believe.

the little boy and the 3rd youngest were adopted out also to a loving family. I could not help telling my loving family group here. I will probably be pouring my heart out to you many times as we receive the children. I do not mean it as cruelty but as a way of release for the soul. I ask that you pray for love understanding and patience on my part in order to help these children. I also pray you ask GOD to bless the many other families who step forward and help these kids.

What a lovely caring thing to do. May God bless you richly (these children become very loving children of the parents that addopted or fostered them), and help you in all that you do for them.

Camylow. if ever you need help in understanding why a child does something then please conntact me in private. i was a child now in my 60's that was reared in a household of hate and abuse, father was a dipsomaniac who took great joy in beating me with a length of shoe leather he had cut slits in so that when it came down on bare skin it would expand the slits to pinch the skin and rip it of, I was mentaly physicaly and sexually abused by him. Mother was dead sister hated me ( and still does) because i had "killed" her mother. Many of the children you will take in have no concept or understanding of love. and love does have to be taught. the biggest advice i could give you right now is this
NEVER lie to them .. allways tell them the truth. Ok you can ommit a bit.
NEVER threaten them. ALLWAYS promise them and ALLWAYS follow through with that promise be it for good or bad. ALLWAYS ask them WHY they did somthing bad. and LISTEN TO THEM, often it is to just get your attention in the only way they know how,
lots of praise for even the smallest of task done without asking lots of laughter at things that may go wrong.
while a child is being praised it is thinking good thoughts whilst a child is being trusted it learning to respect you and themselves,,
Most of them will be like me..
we are not victims we are survivers. and it is very very true that you can catch more monkies with honey than you can ever catch with vinegar.
a kind word and a touch is worth so very very much to those who have never had them. a beating means nothing.
Please teach them to love,, no one ever did that for me till i met my presant hubby the Gods bless him and i had to wait 40 years to learn how, and even now there are momments when i find it hard to show feelings
any problem shout,,, maybe i can have an answer
PS please do not feel sorry for me. I am now happy. eggyannie in the uk.. thank you for wanting to share and care for these children

YOU HAVE TOLD ME ALL THE THINGS WE WERE IN CLASS LEARNING, SO IT IS REFRESHING TO HEAR IT AND CONFIRM IT. TO TELL THE TRUTH, i AM MIGHTY SCARED THAT IN SOME WAY (NOT IN PURPOSE) I WOULD NOT BE QUITE THE SUPPORT THEY NEED. THANKFULLY MY HUSBAND WILL BE THE ONE WHOM WILL BE NURTURING AND TEACHING THEM...HE'S AWSOME WITH PROBLEM CHILDREN COMING FROM PARENTS THAT FOSTERED OUT ALSO. SINCE ONE PARENT WILL HAVE TO WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME, I WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE ON THAT ROLL. WE HAVE RAISED OTHER CHILDREN AND TROUBLED KIDS OUT OF THE SYSTEM. MY HUBBY HAS GOTTEN THEM AWAY FROM DRUGS AND ALCOHOL AND NOW THEY STOP BY AND ARE IN OUR LIVES FOREVER. I KNOW I WILL MAKE MISTAKES, BUT I DID THAT WITH OUR OWN, SO HOPEFULLY I WILL LEARN WITH THEM ALSO. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN THIS AND I WILL SURE BE THERE ASKING FOR YOUR HELP.
SINCE ONLY 2 ARE TO BE PLACED IN A HOME AT THE SAME TIME AND WE DO NOT HAVE CHILDREN OF OUR OWN AT HOME NOW, THEY WILL BE SURE TO HAVE OUR UPMOST ATTENTION. I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT WE CAN GIVE THEM A SUCCESS IN LIFE. AGAIN THANK YOU. WE WILL HOPEFULLY HAVE OUR FIRST CHILD IN 3 MONTHS, SINCE THAT IS THE CERTIFICATION TIME LIMIT.

You and your husband have to be wonderful people to do this, I know it has to be hard. Thank God for people like you. May God be with you and help you with all this you are doing. I have two of my grandkids that I kept four days a week. I don't understand how anyone could hurt one of these little ones. God Bless you.

unfortunately Portland is considered the hub of children trafficing. child prostitution and pornography is high. our small town has one of the nations meth and drug problems per capita. there is so many people losing their homes in our region that the raise in abuse will only rise. i am very proud of my husband for his role in the lives of the kids we have helped out. he is a patient man who can deal with the worst situations.

I was a foster parent of over 10 yrs. I had boys and girls from 3 days old to 17 yrs old. I was licensed up to 4 chldren at one time add my 4 kids to that and you know we had a very busy house lol. I too adopted one of my kids and she is still going to college and will receive her Masters degree in Nov. I am proud to be her Mom.

like i said, my husband was grown up in fostering atmosphere. the children we will be getting are the emotional/mental challenged children. they are judicated children with higher needs than just regular foster kids. hence the limit of 2. these children receive college education while in the system, once adopted they lose this eligiblity. so there would be a pro and con to adopting.
depending on the age also. if they were older and closer to adult hood it might not be the right thing to do at that time.
everything is case to case. bless you for also taking a role in humanity.

May God MIGHTLY use you to be the LIGHT that they have never seen. My mother use to have foster children years ago. It's a BLESSING to be able to be a BLESSING to others that have had so many tears of sorrow. It's a shame before God that people mistreat someone who God says, "Is the APPLE of His eyes". Someone will dearly have to pay for that.
"Hurting people hurt people". When the LORD DELIVERS, He makes NO MISTAKE...I THANK GOD for delivering these children (HALLELUJAH!!!) Be BLESSED! ;D *2U

camylow, I applaud the initiative that you and your husband are undertaking. We are so very much in need of good Foster Parents. I am a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and I go to court with the children who are in care, not by their fault, but because of their parents actions. You will have a hugh role in their lives.

I am very happy to hear that i will have another avenue to turn to (HERE) for the times i need the understanding. i think you will be a great help for us also. thank you

jrob, It's wonderful to hear you are a CASA. It was a fairly new idea when we took in our daughter. The kids need more CASAs. It's hard to be impartial when you're the social worker (I know they try) or child's family. The kids really need someone looking out for their best interests.

You are wonderful to take on this challenge. I too have been a foster parent to my niece. We were fortunate to be able to adopt her after her parents were unable to complete the reunification process. Being a family member meant I didn't have to take the foster care classes but I did anyway. It is so important to know what these children have gone through. This knowledge has really helped me with my patience and understanding through the years. When we adopted my daughter (at age 3) the judge told us we were doing a wonderful job and she thanked us. At that time we realized that the judge was the first person to say thank you. The birth parents hadn't said thank you and neither had the social worker. We didn't expect it but it sure felt good. So I'm going to thank you now for all the love and work you will put into the children you take in.
Thank you.
I want to add one more thing. Take lots of pictures of the children for their personal photo album. It will mean so much to them later.

thank you for the album suggestion. i will be sure to do that. perhaps we can scrapbook it together to make it more special.

Yes! Just 2 days ago I was sitting on the couch with my kids and they were all looking at their baby/toddler photo albums. My adopted daughter just like my birth children. It's so heartwarming to sit with them and talk about their history. I enjoy the scrapbook albums much more than the computer albums. Of course you should probably do both since it is the digital age and these kids are growing up with computers from day 1. Whatever you choose it has to be able to move along with them to their next families. It should have as much who, where, when, information as possible (age appropriate of course) since you don't know who will be able to tell them their life stories in the future.
