Mad 14K, I can only answer for myself, but since I have had 2 different computers crash on me, I store mine on Flash drives, or you can call them Jump drives. You will probably get many answers. Hope this helps.

I use an 8GB Flash Drive. I can not only save my emb designs on it, but can use it to download my designs into my machine. It does take a while to save them from the computer to the flash but, at least I know my designs are safe from any computer problems. Good luck. Sue

Same here mad, I now have an external drive and also use travel sticks or USB Flash drives whatever they call them. As I go away from home to Florida I take all of my Embroidery on a DVD and then add to it by using the travel sticks...

I use a memory stick to save from the internet. Then I put the designs onto a CD. I ofte store on another computer too.

Right now, mine are mostly on the hard drive. EVENTUALLY, I get ambitious enough to organize them...which is a real pain....then burn them to CD.

Don't wait too long. You never know when your computer might crash or get a virus.
I know that you are right, because it has already happened to me. Thankfully, I had recently burned a CD, and was using my son's computer while mine was acting stupid. Managed not to lose TOO much! But, you are absolutely right! I need to do something SOON and not take the chance!

I'm lucky to have a large hard drive so I keep them all on that. I also back up to a portable external hard drive, and periodically backup to DVD as well.. Unfortunately all media types can fail, including CD, DVD, external hard drives and jump/flash/pen drives. To be safe, always have more than one copy! As my gran used to say.. never keep all your eggs in one basket :)

I have files on about everything! Even some old 3 1/2 floppy disks! But I am slowly getting them over to an external hard drive. I have VERY few on my computer hard drive. Lots on CD's, BUT lately I have, for some reason, lost access to files on a couple cds. A friend does have a program that was able to recover most of them. But I think they should be on 2 different things. Flash drives would be great too. In fact I got another one for Christmas, so hopefully will get everything on flash drives & the external. Either way it's a lot of work!!

I have all of my designs on the hard drive of my computer but I also have a copy of them for back up. Backing up your files is a must since lots of things can cause your computer to dump or corupt files.

DVD's, you can store incredible amount of info. Also use those to backup everything on hard drive, they're way cheap. M

I have 2 portable hard drives that I back up my files as well as store them on my DH's computer (he has a 300 gig hard drive and a super fast processor) AND have a copy backed up on my work computer. So if any of my drives fail, I have backups everywhere.
Another thing we are getting is Carbonite. This is an online service for about 50 bucks a year that syncronizes your hard drive with an online server and backs up stuff nightly... it's good for those that store files on their local drives... won't back up automatically externals.

I keep ming on a 250G external hard drive. This paid off bigtime when I got a virus last summer. I had to wipe my entire internal hard drive. My external drive was unaffected.
