It's a program for all of you that will make finding files

amazingly simple. It's called AvaFind.
I don't know how often you search for files (not manually,
but using the search function in XP) but it takes forever.
This FREE program called AvaFind that takes an inventory of
all of the files on
your hard drive and keeps the list of those files somewhere.
The initial set-up takes a little while depending on how many
files you have. I have about 50 Gig of files on my hard drive
and I think it took about 15 minutes to go through all the
files to make the list. But then, I typed in "rose" in the
search box and instantly it brought up a list of ALL the files
on my hard drive that had "rose" in the name. (I think there
were 1,200 of them). I then did a search on ".pes" just to
see how many .pes designs I had on my PC (not including the
ones that are still zipped, of which are in the thousands) and
instantly (well maybe 2 or 3 second later) it came up with a
list of 112,000 files with ".pes" in them that I could look
through to find the file I was looking for. I am constantly
putting files in a folder and then forgetting where I put them.
With the old search program it took literally 5 hours to
seach for the file I was look for. With this program, even
if you only know part of the name, you put that in the search
box and it finds it in nanoseconds. And everytime you create a
file, or delete a file, it updates it's 'list' so it's always
current. I was soooo amazed. It puts a icon in your tray
at the bottom of the screen so all you have to do is click
it and it aks you if you want to open the program window and
then you just put in your file name. It's sooo cool.

I download all my freeware from Cnet. It's a site that has
all kinds of downloads, but it is a more reliable source for
getting downloads. You do have to register to download from
the site, but it's worth it. I think they just
ask for the basic info, name, address, phone, and you create
a User Name and Password and then when you google something,
just look for the "Cnet" site address and select that one item
from the big list to get your download from. It's more
secure and there is less chance of downloading something
you don't want (like a virus or trojan horse, etc).

I will post the URL under a this message)

I am just so excited about this new utility that I had to
share and you. I dont' know how you all feel
about freeware or downloading from an unknown site on the net
but I have been downloading freeware and regular software
from Cnet for years and have NEVER had a problem.
They also basic offer technical support for software on
their site.

It might be worth your while just to give it a try. It is just
so fast, and you don't even need to know the exact file name.
I highly recommend it. And like I said, if you are like me and
can't remember where you put files, it's going to be a life-
saver.

Good Luck and PM me and let me know how you make out if you
do download it or have any questions.

Eric

Ok, just found this. It's raining and I may be really dumb today, but I looked this over, and I'm not sure I understand why this is different from the search function in the 'Start' menu of my XP. I can set parameters on that, look for all or part of a file name, zip files can be included in results, I can search by date if I want, etc. I like the Cnet site, they have good stuff, but I just don't see why this is different from the search I already have. I could be really dense, that's been known to happen, hee hee hee. Explain, somebody? Thanks, and hugs, Marji

If I understood correctly...I think Eric explained that doing a search of your C:/ drive can take a long time (I know it does for my C drive) this software program reduces the amount of time it takes to do a search, other than the initial set up of it.
by marjialexa 20 Apr 2009
Well, I must not have as much stuff as everybody else, hee hee hee. My XP search usually takes about 60 seconds, if I put in exactly what I'm looking for. Hmmm, do I need more "stuff" on my computer? Hee hee hee.

Thank you! This is FAST. I filled in the boxes for my search, hit enter and looked up to see no change on the screen. THEN I realized it had long since done the search as I was typing! Good find! flowers to you.
