Thanks everybody for coming to my rescue. My next question is do you include the stabilizer in the hoop or, as one person told me, leave it tucked free between the material and the machine ?

I hoop one layer and if necessary float the second underneath. If I use wss on top, I float that too. My machine can do a basting stitch, size depending on the design, and I use that to make sure everything stays in place.

amazinggrace, I do as mops - hoop one layer - float another - especially the top and do a basting stitch or use pins to hold it all secure - you learn what works for you and what you are comfortable with - enjoy! *4U Shirlene
