In this case I used a pattern from a magazine (Ottobre - a Finnish magazine), but in the past I have done them free hand so to speak. What I do is take a fitting T-shirt, trace it on a piece of paper; now I decide how low I want the neckline to be and draw that in - a slightly curved line, higher for the back than the front. Then I draw a diagonal line from the armline, some 1"- 1 1/2" from the side seam to the neckline. Cut those pieces out. Now you have the pattern for the front and the back, only thing you have to do is add some extra width, say 1" to half the pieces, just mid front and mid back. And you can add 1 - 2" at the bottom side seam and draw a line from there to the top of the side seem. Now for the sleeves. You've got half a sleeve width a rounded bit at the corner, going in. You just have to mirror that to get a curve going outwards, as it does on the body pieces. And you have to add some extra width (1"to half the pattern). Now you can stitch the lot together, either fold in seams or use a facing along the neckline and the lower edge of the sleeves, put in some elastic (I used 1/4 " width) and that's all. It may sound far more difficult than it is. Oh, and once you tried it out on a piece of old material and made adjustements, you'll see how easy it is. Don't forget to add some nice embroidery and it looks top dollar.

I'm glad you like them, Mary. For mine, I start with the yoke and sleeve pattern pieces from a Simplicity pattern...and then just "do" the rest! Cut..measure...sew...and in the end, they just happen. Without the embroidery, I can have one done in under an hour. I'm taking them out in a week to add to my Farmer's Market booth. I bet the bumble bee dress will be the "BUZZ" of the morning!

Now that I know I'm going to have a DGD I can see I'll be making lots of these. They are so cute and look easy too.

MM, so happy to see you post this - wouldnt' it be wonderful to make your three girls (Tori, Isabelle, and Brhianon) a dress from a shirt that they know that their Daddy wore or from shirts that you might get at the thrift store for pennies? Can't wait to see your finished project. *4U
