I need a download to read/view the PES files

you can download Wilcom True Sizer and convert another type file to pes. You will need to download the other file type to your hard drive first, then open in True Sizer and save as pes file. Free download

What are you wanting to do with the design? Are you wanting to just be able to see what the design is? Or do you want to be able to manipulate the design (re-size, add text, merge multiple designs)?
If you are only wanting to be able to tell what the design is at a glance, I suggest that you try SewIconz by Sands Computing (you can find it easily with a Google search). They offer a free trial, and the software is stand-alone (you don't need anything else to go with it) for only $20. What it does is shows the design as an icon in Windows XP or higher.
If you want to be able to do more things with the design, look into Embird or one of the many other programs available. Lots of them have free trial versions so you can see what you like and what you don't like. Personally, I bought Embroidery Magic 2 for less than $100, but it isn't exactly compatible with Windows Vista (if you have that) and comes with very little documentation. There are places to buy a tutorial for it (my favorite is Aunty M) and you can find a Yahoo group or two to help you learn.
