Question!! I have never done any "redwork". I am not sure what weight thread to use, or should I use my 40 weight and go over it twice to make it thicker? Thanks.

It does show much better if you use a 30 wt. I've never tried to go over it twice. Depending on the design, most of them will stitch over the line at least twice anyway. Be careful with the stabilizer..if you use tear away it can mess up the stitches. Good luck! Do a sample first & see how you like it.

I have had some tear aways pull the stitches out of alignment especially with thinner fabric. Maybe that's what she is talking about.

yep, that was what happened! I have been know to cut the tear away off close to the line of stitching if I have to use a tear away!

Is this a design you are digitizing or a completed design you have obtained from someone else? On redwork designs that I have purchased I just use my regular emb. thread and stitch out the design. I have on occasion done a double stitch out if the design is very thin. In that case I usually move my hoop a hair to give the design more depth. Won't work on faces tho cause the facial features get all wonky. Hope this helps.

Maryio, You give me tooo much credit, I could not digitize if my life depended on it, sure wish I could at times. I have never found an easy starter for beginners. No one seem to put out such a thing. I like your moving the hoop idea. Thanks, H&*
I have the Pfaff 2170 and can actually move the design in the hoop in any direction. I just recently did a single color paisley in 3 colors by moving the hoop just slightly and restitching twice. It came out lovely.
Maryio, I have the Babylock Ellegante, and I am able to move thing around also. I have never thought of moveing designs to enhance them. Thanks, H&*.

Sally, dear - if it is a design that you have that was made for RW - just use your regular embroidery thread - unless the designer has specified it is for a heavier weight. *4U

Yes, Shirlene, all the redwork at Cute is 'designed' as redwork, sews out beaufitully & 'thickly' without messing with it, with ordinary embroidery thread. Thanks for clarifying this for us!! Hugs, Marji

I just use Marathon Embroidery thread and it has always looked perfect! I only once went over a design twice and that was only because the actual design was digitized using a very 'thin' outline and I wanted it to appear 'darker / thicker'! It looked great!

Read through them all, good advice ,redwork, bluework, blackwork anycolor work I usually use the same color top & bottom. I like moving the hoop slightly for depth also, try usingslightly darker thread for 2nd color for the depth. Guess what? I remember when I had to ask what ttt meant. We all have things to learn every day. *

Ooohhh, Lilian, I never thought about moving the hoop and using a slightly darker color for effect! I can 'jog' my hoop with my machine in itty bitty increments, that would be marvelous, have to try it!! Thanks! Marji

I did not ask the question because I have never sewn any r.w. because I did not think it would show up. I sure learned alot! I like the r.w. kitchen sets here on Cute and was going to try them on some thin dish towels, not those with the thick nap. I will try Tuesday as I have Dr. Appt. tomorrow in the middle of the day. Even if I am not hurting very much, I will be all to pieces after I sit for almost 2 hrs. and let them dig in my legs. I'm not fit for man or beast after I get home! I am looking forward to doing some for my DIL just for decoration. She is a decorating nut! I really think she could put Martha Stewart to shame! She is just to shy to try. Everytime I go over there she has a "new" house. She always raves about everything I do so it makes me feel good! I get a little bit of the glory. I sure did learn alot by reading all the answers and I have been embroidering for several years. Thanks for the info! Linda * for all

Great question, great answers!!! I always use the same color embroidery thread in the bobbin, because I do dish towels, and want it nice on either side. I learned the hard way about tear-away stabiliser on redwork, as GerryB says, don't use it. On dish towels, I either starch it stiff and don't use stabilizer, or use water soluble and wash it out. I make sure they're really really tight in the hoop if I don't use stabilizer, though. Good luck, and thanks for the question!! Hugs, Marji

Redwork is usually digitised with a treble (or bean) stitch and shows up great in 40 wt thread. No need to go over it twice.
