when doing applque the first stitch is for placement so you can see were the material needs to go then the second stitch is to place material, after that stitch you trim as close as you can without cutting the stitch, then you just continue with sew out.

Got your answer. It's fairly simple and lots of fun to do. I use 12 needle machines at work. And I am so spoiled. I would love to have one at home. What brand is your commercial machine, and can you give me some likes and dislikes about it?
