Is there a software out there that I can try for free? How hard is it to learn? Is it difficult?

I would love to see a tutorial only because I want to know if I can understand it before I buy a program. Some software is very hard to follow. Digitizing software if very hard for me to understand. So I hope this is easier.

You can buy lessons that will teach you. They are fantastic. Try these sites.

The program I have is Embird and I love it...You can get tutorials to learn on this program. Some are free but the best way is to buy a subscription to learn. You get all the help you need at any time of day. You can also join Yahoo groups to help you out. Hope this is of some help to you..This is just a few I know of...

Do you already own software that has the capability to split the design? If so, what brand?

I can only use 4 x 4 designs. Can you use the bigger designs by splitting the design?

Yes, but you need software to do it. If you have software that goes with your machine read the manual and see if it has this ability. You can always ask a specific question here - if you mention the software you have, there will surely be someone having the same and being able to help.
