Surprise for me. I've lived in this house for 9 years and this never flowered. I nearly pulled it because I didn't know what it was. Lilly? It's beautiful, now what do I do with it?

well in holland we call this a "gladiool" don't know the english name.You can cut it and put it in a vaze, but be sure to put water in the vaze also :)

Gladiola (or sword lily, I think it's called). The root should be half exposed, not buried - in that case it does not flower so well. Enjoy, once it starts it will form more shoot next year.

Was it supposed to take this long to flower? May be I should have fed it. Can I cut it now or should I wait?
I messed up. It's irises that should have their rhizomes planted at the surface!! Woke up in the middle of the night and remember what I'd written!!
Gladioli bulbs have to planted 2-3 " deep and they advice taking them up after the first night frost and replanting in spring in well manured soil. We are having a light sandy soil and they don't flourish in that. We were used to leave them in where lived before and they did well, but now we really have to pamper them.
You can cut them now and when you remove dead flowers they should all come to bloom, all they way to the top.

What a pretty flower all the more so as you have waited so long for it to flower.
I call this flower a Gladioli, but I always dig a hole about 3 inches deep place some course sand in the base of the hole - to assist drainage - place the corm on top of the sand and cover it over. In the UK it is best to dig them up in the autumn and store in a frost proof place over winter. Where I live it's very wet in winter and the corms would not survive.

Oh my GM used to have glads growing all over her yard. They're such a pretty flower, aren't they? :-)

I have quite a few of these in my garden but none in this colour. Hope you dont have to wait another 9 years before it flowers again

Yes, you can cut it now, and the flowers should keep opening. It may not have flowered before because of where it's planted. Are you in the South USA? Usually in the North, you have to dig glads up or they freeze. Glads like sunshine, and to be well drained. Good luck, it's beautiful, my favorite color purple. Hugs, Marji

I live in the mountains of Wv and one year I forgot to dig up my glads and lo and behold up they came next year and have bloomed every year since. They multiply and now I have many glads blooming

I just meant that this is such a grand place to learn all sorts of things - and long may it continue that way.
Is your flower still as glorious? Lets hope that now the corm has learned what it's purpose is it will flower every year.
