I will tell you what works for me and I am sure there may be others who will be able to offer their suggestions too..what works for me may not for others..Needles I use are ballpoint, Stabilizer is usually a medium weight cutaway, and I do use spray adhesive on the stabilizer and shirt to keep it from shifting while I'm placing it in the hoop. Do not stretch the t-shirt though while trying to hoop it. Just make sure there is no play in the fabric. I also use a finishing stabilzer that is ironed on only after the embroidery is completed..I use it so it is soft next to the skin...

I use a medium cutaway to support the design..My first time doing a t-shirt I used tear away but after washing the shirt the fabric curled around the design. Embroidery Library has Awesome tips on embroidering on t-shirts.

Here is a link to Embroidery Library Techniques as suggested by lv2sew. But her own advice to you sounds pretty good to me.

I use the same material as FSL and put it on top of the t-shirt, it does not stretch and it works very well, or at least 2 layers.
When you're done, you can wash it off.
