I not sure either. But it seems to be different depending upon the project. The stitches have to connect securely together so it doesn't fall apart and hold whatever shaped is beign formed.

FSL stands for Free Standing Lace. I'm only a novice when it comes to fsl, but I'm sure you will get some good advice from ShirleneR or Manami who do such lovely work in this field. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Comparing with regular filled embroidery designs, FSL stitches are different on density(to make it not heavy, like a lace) and number of layers(to connect all parts so they wont fall apart after washing the stabilizer away). For the doilies I used plain fill, motif, regular stitches, and satin stitches, and worked also to dont have any jumps in the entire design. It's very interesting once you learn how to configurate all those things.

Carolyn, I just stitch them - not sure of the names - motif and satin stitch mostly - the lines usually run across and dianglal - then they have a motif - sometimes - over the top of that or a stipple like effect - with a satin stitch running along the outside. Hehehe! *4U
