After reading Meganne's write-up about Embird, I am convinced, but I HAVE to upgrade my Bernina software if I want to use it with Windows 7. Question: Will Embird (digitising programme) also enable me to do exactly what the Bernina software (Editor lite v4) does? Unfortunately no time to explore the Embird "trial", as I am preparing to fly out to SA SOON, and have to buy dongle there if I have to have it. I trust your help and answers - THANK YOU Cuties! (It's raining at last in Botswana!)

I am sure you will need the dongle to excess your existing bernina files. I am keeping an eye on this post of yours as we must buy new computer and I only have ver 4 of Bernina. You do not need your dongle 4 Embird. I can open my ART files in Embird. And u can convert ur ART files to any other format. I would suggest that when u r in SA to call head office and speak to Alta. She is the expert and dedicated to only the Bernina software. She knows her job and the software inside out. Sterkte en laat my weet.

Thanks Marthie, Already in communication with Alta, my concern is just that head office won't "market Embird vs their own expensive software". Just want to make sure that Embird can also perform the limited functional things that the dongle does.

Suzette, Embird can read art-files and convert from them, but not TO .art. So if you need art-files for your embroidery machine you need the Bernina software.
Embird Studio is a great digitising programme and the newest uograde (Embird 2010) is even better than the 2008 edition. I love it and enjoy working with it. It compares favourably with my Husqvarna 3D Pro, which I still use for a number of things - like doing cross stitch.
