I have used this vinyl in the I spy toys and it works fine. make sure your needle is sharp and the thread is strong. I used the medium weight vinyl like you use to cover a fabric table cloth to protect it from spills.

Vinyl comes in different gauges. At Joann Fabrics, look & feel the different ones they have... some are thicker/heavier than others depending on the gauge (I forget which way it goes if the higher number means a thinner vinyl or vice versa). I've done snowflakes on vinyl & didn't have a problem at all... anytime I go to Joann's I always look in the remnant bin & have snagged getting a piece or two from there as opposed to buying it off the roll.

Not quite a 'firsthand' opinion, since I haven't done any 'bug jars', but I think the only thing to remember when working with vinyl as an applique is that it's going to be slipprier than fabric against the other fabric. Maybe someone who has actually done this can give an opinion, but I think I'd use some tape, Scotch, or the blue painter's tape, to hold it in position securely so it can be tacked down. Once it's tacked down it should be ok, and the tape should just tear away along the stitches. This is a theory, mind you, not a fact, hee hee hee. Facts can often be quite different. Good luck! The only thing I can say about vinyl was that I had to use a teflon foot and I put tissue paper under the vinyl so that it didn't stick to the foot or the bed of my machine. Other than that, it worked just fine. Oh and, I used a longer stitch length so that I didn't cut the vinyl. Have fun! Frannie

I've done the bug jars on t-shirts and didn't have any problems at all. I don't recall having changed anything as far as needles, thread or settings on my machine, but I did use a tearaway over where the stitching was going to be so that my foot didn't stick. After finishing, I just tore it off. Gave my DGS one of the shirts I made and DD says it washes just fine, too. I bought the plastic that is sold for covering furniture at Walmart. There are several posted in projects, including one that I made.;)

I have used vinyl in the I Spy bags and found that if you use a satin applique stitch it quite often is too dense and will cut through the vinyl almost as if you scissor cut around the area. I would do the bug jar and then cut out the area and stitch the vinyl under using a straight stitch around the satin stitch area. Having never made the bug jars I can only hope my explanation is helpful.
