I tried Sophie Sew to learn on. It is free, and has a good tutorial on the website. Even if you don't end up using it permanently, it's a great way to get your feet wet.

Hi I have been using embroidery gallery series. They have free trials you can try before purchasing. I file all my designs easily on studio plus, I use custom works, density works and hoop works. They also have masterworks for digitizing. That is my next one. If you like it I have a brand new studio plus I am willing to sell real cheap to get you started. I already have the program and I got another one new. Thanks Suzanne

Embird is one of the most user friendly Digitising programs available so if you had problems using it perhaps you should just try using a free program, such as Ambassador, until you become familiar with embroidery.
Ambassador will reformat and resize designs for you and I think you can do simple editing with it.
After you have gained some experience then you could progress to a purchased program, otherwise you could just be wasting your money.
Of course it really depends on what it is you wish to do with the program.
And in case you were not aware, you can purchase Embird immediately after you have downloaded the free trial version because what you download is the full version, you just need to purchase your licence for each module you want, install the licence and you are fully operational.

I don't have embird, but have seen numerous yahoo groups and websites with free help for it. Much more than others. Try a google search, or check the yahoo groups for more information before you give up.
