Hi Moyed,

They are a special cutting mat - looks like hard plastic and when you put your rotary cutter on to it to cut through the fabric it doesn't cut through the mat. That's why they are called self healing - they don't get cut marks through them. Sometimes over a period of time you might see a scratch come up but by and by they are usually mark free.
