Always either hand or machine stitch your applique. If you want to be a bit adventurous you could use a decorative stitch you have on your machine, but it must be a closed stitch or blanket stitch, and make sure you overlap the raw edge of the applique.

I made a tablecloth long time ago, and only use the fusible pellon, now every time i wash it I have to use pieces of pellon to "glue" some sections. I think that you are better off if you spend some time stitch it too.

I do both. Bond then stitch. Maybe I am overdoing it.

You are from Australia. In Australia we use Vlisofix or Heat and Bond for applique.
Iron on Pellon is used for the wadding in patchwork, such as wall hangings and table runners,place mats, etc, anything that does not need the heavier type of wadding.
And yes, you definitely have to stitch it. It will come of in the wash.
