I forgot about the popcorn, and only remember when I got up and noticed the smoke. It was so bad that it set off the fire alarms. Not once, but twice. The alarm company called to make sure we were okay, and if we needed assistance. Needless to say the entire house was filled with eye burning smoke. My microwave was a mess, and the entire house had the acrid smoke smell in it. We opened up the house and turned on all of the fans, but we still get a whiff of that smell. This "dumb ole girl" as my hubby called me was beside herself. I have used vinegar, lemon juice, and just about everthing to freshen the house. I have never burned anything in the micorwave before - too bad my first time was such a mess. LOL

I don't even like UNBURNED popcorn smell in my microwave, as it wants to linger forever! I can't even imagine what you have gone through! When they were filming the movie in our house last December, we stopped over one day to watch them shoot. They had a sign up "NO FOOD ON SET"...but when we got back into our kitchen, I found them using the microwave for popcorn...LOTS of popcorn! I guess they were using it on the set with one of the actors...but, the director and the crew were eating it, too. I had the microwave all clean for them...then they left it for me, smelling like popcorn! I like popcorn...but for some reason, it sure stinks up a microwave! GOOD LUCK!!!

If you want to get unwanted odours out of your microwave use a safe container and mix 1/2 cup cold water and add few drops of vanilla essence into the water and microwave for about 1 min or until water is almost boiled. leave for 1 min then remove and wipe out the microwave it not only cleans it but leaves it smelling ok :) Ash good luck

It's such a shame that the smell has lingered. Have you tried vinegar, newsprint, lemons, and vanilla?

silly girl - first just light some candles in the house and the smell will disappear (assuming you can't open the windows) then wash with a solution of baking soda and water and it should freshen your microwave, and I also agree a new microwave has a 'popcorn' button so that won't happen agian. :-)

Believe it or not, I do have the popcorn button, but didn't use it - just a dumb ole girl - either that or a brain fluff.

I clean my microwave with lemon water or vinegar water. My hubby ALWAYS burn popcorn in the micorwave. I have no lingering odors now. I fill a bowl with water and add the lemon or vinegar. Run microwave for 4-5 minutes. Let cool and use a dish cloth or sponge dipped in the water to wipe down the inside. The steam cuts down any splatters and everything smells nice and fresh.
