Did you add designs (embroidered) to the blocks, already or is it just fabric blocks with no embroidery? The technique in the picture is called stippling or stippled effect, in English.

Maybe you could describe the quilt. This kind of stippled quilting would look awful over embroidery. It would look lovely on plain cloth blocks but should be done (freehand i.e. not an embroidery design) around the embroidery on blocks that have embroidery on them. I think that if you could post a pic of the quilt somewhere then we could look and decide what it needs. Have you ever done freehand quilting with the feed dogs down or with a Bernina BSR where you control the cloth under the needle with your hands and move it the way that the stitching should go ? I have done quite a lot of quilting and have a Tin Lizzie quilter with a king size frame but would like to see the quilt first to advise a little further.

Are you asking about using the stippling on the backing design? If so, I would sandwich a thin layer of felt type batting between your outside/exposed fabric and an inside piece of fabric (this will be unseen inside the finished quilt). Hoop and stipple in whatever pattern you choose (i.e. checkerboard effect, offset blocking) and when all stippling completed, assemble the quilt as normal. ~Rita

Sissi, this sort of stippling should be done to your fabric before you do the embroidery work - in my opinion. Stippling can be done free hand on the machine or quilting machine around the outside of the embroidered piece or on the finished quilt. I would be fearful of ruining what you have done - to put this on top of what you have embroidered and mounted.

Silvie, I never used the stippling on my quilts but I read somewhere that you do the stippling before you embroider on the blocks. I hope this helps.

Sissi the stippling I would use on blocks with no embroidery. I prefer the stitching in the ditch type of quilting on the machine. for me it is easier. I know u will get some excellent advice from our cutes that do a lot of quilting. good luck with it all *

I have 2 hand embroidered quilts that I made. There is a little bit of stippling around the embroidery of each block. It is just enough to make the embroidery pop. It is not on the edge but about a finger-width away from the embroidery. I hope this helps. I hope we get to see the finished quilt.

If you have all ready stitched the blocks with designs, I would not want to put stippling over the top of the designs. Now, if this is done over quilted pieces it would be okay. Good luck with this, and hope to see your finished project.

I agree with everyone here - DON'T PUT AN ALL OVER STIPPLING DESIGN OVER YOUR EMBROIDERIES.

I did my quilt for Amy (AFRICAN ANIMAL QUILT IN PROJECTS)and I only had my quilter go around each design, so that they were outlined to stand out and on the back of the quilt you can see the design shape of each animal. It looks great!

You really should do the stippling first on the square of fabric and then, if so desired, you can embroider a design on top.

...choose a 1/4 inch from inside the seam line to go around each square OR Stitch in the Ditch...just stitch on each seam line!! Only stipple on blocks with no design. That's just MY opinion...Good Luck and PLEASE post a PIC when finished:)
