day with him. He had "overflow diarrhoea" and Mum was just beside herself. We put up with it till the Friday and I took them to hospital and we watched him sleep. They put him on a drip and told us to go home. By Sunday he was in so much pain - by then he was constipated. I unfortunately had to see my family in town and I told Mum to ring the hospital. Well, when we got back to Mum's home at 11.00 the Ambulance was there and I followed it to Belmont Hospital. We watched him sleep again from 11.30 till 7.00 in the Emergency dept. and they gave him several saline bags to rehyrdrate him. The doctors decided to admit him.

On Monday we went into see him and he was disoriented, and had lashed out at the medical staff. So he has been moved to the North Block which is for "Confused Patients". Mum and I both got sick Tuesday and Wednesday but we still saw the social worker on Wednesday. Mum has finally given in and asked that he not come home. She is devastated, but cannot look after him anymore. Especially as she herself has only just had her right knee replaced 6 weeks ago. I don't know how she has managed him. Mum's been telling me how bad he's been at night, wandering, and bashing walls and knocking everything off his dressing table and side tables. It's such a dreadful disease.

My sister and I have both told her not to feel guilty, but she says she still does. They have been married 58 years and have never been apart except for a short time in the mid 1950's. I think even though they have fought over the years, Mum is still going to find it lonely. I mean to say we are all still here for her, but it's the night-time that is the worst!!

Anyway, last night after work I went into see him. As I was walking into the hospital my son was walking out with tears in his eyes. I told him I just wanted to see him for a little while and Ben said he just didn't know what to expect when he saw him and was so shocked to see him in the state he was in. He only celebrated his 78th birthday on the 23rd July and had all the family around him and was mobile etc. We had a chat with the nurses and unfortunately they had to strap him to the bed overnight as he was wandering. Well, I can imagine how confused and frustrated he would be as he doesn't know where he is and he gets very agitated when people try to touch him.

Ben tried to feed him his pill with some Yoghurt but he bought it back up. I was holding the paper towel under his mouth and just talking to him letting him know I was there, but I don't think he even knew I was. They have him heavily sedated at the moment until they can work out what will work with him.

Mum and I are going back to the hospital today at 2.00 to see the social worker and work out what the next steps are. I know they will be putting him into another ward for Dementia patients which is on the second floor. We then have the unenviable task of looking around at Nursing homes. There is one literally about a 200metre walk from Mum's place so we'll check that one out first. You see Mum doesn't drive and I don't want it to be too far away for her. Oh! the things that are going through my mind are just mind boggling at the moment.

I haven't even felt like sewing and what with being sick it's just been an horrendous week.

Thanks for letting me vent my feelings, it's nice to know that there are many others on here who have been through similar situations.

I just wanted to ask all the Prayer Warriors on here for God's will in whatever will happen with my Dad. He is only 20 years older than me! It's a worry - this might be me in 20 years time.

Love and blessings to you all Chris

Thanks so much Karen - I've just been on the phone to Mum and we've both had a restless night. She was thinking of when all the aggression started and it was only in April. Thanks for thinking us and praying too. Love Chris

Oh Chris, I'm so sorry you are dealing with this unhappy situation. I want to share with you my devotion for today, which I think you will find, hopefully, encouraging.I didn't read it until I read your post here. This is from a little devotional titled "Jesus Calling" Today's says, "Trust Me, in the midst of a messy day. Your inner calm- your Peace in My Presence - need not be shaken by what is going on around you. Though you live in this temporal world, your innermost being is rooted and grounded in eternity. When you start to feel stressed, detach yourself from the disturbances around you. Instead of desperately striving to maintain order and control in your little world, relax, and remember that circumstances cannot touch My Peace. Seek My Face, and I will share My mind with you, opening your eyes to see things from My perspective. Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not be afraid. The Peace I give is sufficient for you. (Now I'm not supposed to copy this word for word, but I felt you could use a little encouragement.) This is a literal translation from the following scriptures: John 16:33, Psalm 105:4; John 14:27.Please share this with your Mum...
You and your family will be in my daily prayers. As you have requested, I will pray for God's Will. There is no other but His. I know this is a frightening time, but with prayer and family support you will be fine. It's sad that your dad has violent dementia. The hardest to deal with. It drains you physically, mentally, and emotionally. I pray that your mom will be able to list him into the one that is near the house. God CAN open that door. Just ASK Him... I will... Love and Prayers. Terre

Oh! my Terre - I'm crying my eyes out here - thank you so much for those very encouraging words from the Good Book.

You have just the right knack of saying the right thing when needed.

Thank you too for your prayers - we really need them at the moment.

It's so heartening to know that there are other people in the world praying for us.

Chris, my heart goes out to you. We went through this with my parents, but it was reversed My daddy cared for my mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. When she was firt diagnosed the spoke and he swore to her that he would never leave her, and never have her put in a home. She too became violent, and did many things that we had never though that she would do. As a family it was decided that they would give her no more medications, and she actually came back around for a bit. But, at one point Daddy had to walk out on her while she was in one of her rants at the hospital, and he felt like he had let her down. That is the first time I heard my Daddy cry. He cared for her up until the day before he died. She had to be taken to a home, and Daddy to the hospital where he only lived one more day. She lived for 9 more months. My heart aches for you and your family. Blessings and prayers to you.

Chris, can't tell you how sorry I am that you and your mother are having to deal with this. How horrendous to loose you loved one while they are still alive. I can't imagine. The only redeaming thing I can think of is, "at least he doesn't know what shape he's in and what is happening to him." Can you imagine how that would be? I pray that our Father's will be known to you and your mother and that His peace encompasses you both. Love and blessing to you too.;)

Thank you so much Jerrilyn for taking the time to reply. I know my real Dad is in there somewhere and not himself at the moment. I draw strength and reflect continually of him just last month at his 78th birthday party. The look on his face with all the children there is something I'll never forget.

Chris, my dear - I am just so sorry this is happening to your Dad at this time - your Mum must be beside herself and I know you are worried for them both and the rest of the family, as well. I will be prayeing for acceptance of God's Will for you and the family. There never is a time - that any of this is easier than another - when my Mother's dementia was at it's worse - I was in NC - at the time - I had no idea how difficult it was for the family - instead of them helping her - they left her alone - but the time - that I found out how bad it was getting - Rick and I moved to UT from NC - once we were here and got her some care and meds - she seemed to have some calm come into her life and then I had her join the CUTE family and she settled down - I know this isn't possible for your Dad - but maybe there is something that your Mum could do - to keep her mind busy with other's, too. When my Mother came to the CUTE site - she found another family - one that she could learn to love from across the miles - she adored all of you and it calmed her down so much. I am hoping that they find the meds or no meds - that will help your Dad - get through this - there is one thing that you have to remember - he is still your Dad, even when he can't remember that. Care for him, love him and do whatever you have to do - to get him the care that he needs. Help your Mum realize that she can't be all for him - not now - even though she wants to - she can't, nor can you - allow the staff to do whatever they have to do - to make his world comfortable - so that they can deal with him, for his sake. Vent and cry and tell us whatever you care to - it will help. we will be praying for you and the family and will be here for you, as much as you need us. And please don't worry about that this might be you in 20 years time. I went through that, too. If it is - it is. We can only live today and do that with love in your heart for those around you, today.

Dear Shirlene, thank you so much for such kind words of comfort. It is especially special coming from you when you and Rick have been through so much yourselves.

Mum unfortunately is not a sewer but loves going out. She and my priest and a couple of other ladies went to the Morpeth Teapot Exhibition yesterday and she said it was just what she has needed as she hasn't been out in months. She doesn't count the days that I take her out everywhere!!!!!! he he he!

With regards to the meds - they have stopped giving him Aracept (for the Alzheimer's) and are now trying to get his INR stable. He needed a Vitamin K needle today as the number was too high.

He will be staying in hospital in the High Dependancy Unit for another week and hopefully they will be able to get him to come out of his semi comatose state.

He has been delirious and not eating and is down to about 65kgs. When we left him today he was in the foetal position and looked so helpless. Mum and I both are in agreement that he won't be coming back home. I don't know though how Mum will cope being on her own yet. Time will tell.

Thanks once again for such a comforting letter.

Love and blessings to you Chris

Oh Chris, you have taken time out of you busy day - to post - thank you. I am so happy that your Mum was able to go out and have Tea with the priest and the ladies of the church - I do hope that they help you and do something like that often - I felt that she needed something else to distract her - it does sound like the hospital are working through what your Dad needs or doesn't need - it is never easy to know - that they will never come home - isn't it? When I realized that with my Mother - it was heart breaking - but she lived a full and wonderful year - that she may never have had - in the care of some great people and she met some others that kept her busy and she bonded with them and had another group of people in her life that she never would have had otherwise. I don't know if your Dad will get to that level - but you just never know - as you asked - we are praying for acceptance of God's will. We trust that His will is what is happening with your Dad, at this point. Love, Shirlene
by pennifold 30 Aug 2010
Thanks Shirlene for your comments. Unfortunately Dad has gone past the stage where he will be able to relate to other people. He still hasn't recognised us - it's heartbreaking to say the least.

We were there today to feed him at lunch time and all he'd take was 1 strawberry and some Passionfruit yoghurt (that we actually took in!!!) and that's all he had eaten so far today. He's not eating well at all and we hope that once these drugs are calibrated correctly he might be able to eat some food. He has lost the ability to chew and spits out meat - it's just like a kid! The moments he is lucid he gives a wink to the nurses as they go past and he'll give the thumbs up sign to the wardsmen.

We just take each day as it comes.

I'm so busy for the rest of the week with babysitting duties, I don't know if I'll get in to see him. I'll try my best.

Thanks for all your support - I really appreciate it.

Chris, I haven't been to the Cuties posts in a while, but when I read yours this morning, it just broke my heart. I am a nurse, and I know what it must be like for you and your Mum. My grandmother had that, and it was devastating for my mother. who was her primary caregiver. It took a terrible toll on my mother at the time, also.
Please be assured that many, many prayers are ascending for you, your Mum, and your Dad. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Keep strong in your Faith; God will provide the strength for you, and He has promised to send the Comforter (Holy Spirit) to you.
Take one day at a time --
"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil[trouble] thereof."
Matthew 6:33-34
Vent to your Cuties family --
"...and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."
Proverbs 18:24
Remember, always, that we love you!
Blessings,
Diane

Thank you so much Diane, it's so comforting coming on here and reading the replies.

We had another dreadful visit yesterday - Saturday was fine. So it's one day at a time, until they can figure out the right balance of drugs.

I know God is with me and I feel a tremendous sense of calm when I visit him. I made him an angel and put it in his drawer - he doesn't know of course.

We have the sad task of visiting a nursing home today to see if it will be suitable. I have babysitting duties and 1 days work for the rest of the week, so today's the day.

Love and blessings Chris and thankyou for thinking of me.

Chris, I had noticed that we had not heard much from you recently and had wondered how your mother was getting on. Dementia is truely dreadful, you have lost the person you love and are left with a familiar looking person who has another mind. They do not respond as you expect them too. Your mum has made a huge step. Life must be most difficult but it will improve. Becoming dehydrated makes a muddled mind worse. I have a very close friend who is going through the same with her mil but they dont live near. You are fortunate to have your parents living close by. My thoughts are with you and I will keep thinking positively for all of you. Lastly DONOT think of your future in 20 odd years

Thanks for replying - we've had a very busy week - I've only come on a couple of times to post.

You are right with the dehydration - it makes you worse.

We actually bought our parents up here to live 7 years ago as Dad had some heart trouble, so I am also glad they are not too far away. It is only a 4 minute drive for me and the hospital is only a 10 min drive.

Thanks for the advice about the future - you never know what each day brings, do you?

Chris, It breaks my heart for you , your Mom and Dad and your children. This is a family affair that will touch each of you in a different way. It is so sad when something like this reaches out and touches a family as close as all of you are and each of you will have to deal with this in your own way but encourage each other along the way. You will most certainly get your strength from the Lord first and then from each other as times goes by. I do pray that your Dad's Dr's. can get him stabilized and find the right meds to relax him some.
Your Mom is going to feel the pain alot more closely than the rest of you because he has been her partner and her extra strength for many years. She is going to need alot of attention herself.
Hopefully, the family will able to keep her busy enough to get her away from this sometimes although her mind and heart will be with him. My prayers and thoughts will be with you and the family although we are so far away in miles. Your first thoughts should be to keep your Mom on a regular schedule and see that she eats and sleeps as she should and that she is surrounded with as much family and love as possible. The Dr's and the Lord will have to be in charge of taking care of your Dad. Hopefully with the two together, your Dad will have some peace and some calm to carry him through without so much aggitation. May our Lord give him some solace in these bad days to come.
I know it is hard for your Mom to place him in a nursing home but it is really best for all concerned. The people there are trained in how to care for him and he will be alot safer where someone will be with him every moment that he needs help. Hopefully they can get him on some medication that will make him better but your Mom is still not able to give him the medical care he is going to need. It would wonderful if he could be close to home so your Mom can see him whenever she feels like it because she is going to worry about him and worry about putting in a home and all the other things that she can not control. That is just human nature. Much love to all of you. With your family and everyone being so close, there will be alot of love and family concern and help at all times. Try to get yourself well and let each day fall in place as the Lord has planned and we will all pray for each and everyone of you. You take care of yourself because your Mom is really going to need some loving help to get her through these times ahead. Trust in the Lord and he will get you and your Parents through this in His own way. Love and prayers will be with you! Linda

Dear Linda,

You must be reading my mind! Yes, Mum is feeling it dreadfully. After all 58 years together even though they used to fight like cat and dog sometimes makes it hard to let go.

When I look at Dad it's just not him. I keep hoping each day he'll wake up and look at us and recognise us. Maybe once the drugs are balanced out.

If not, well then he will be better off in a Nursing Home where he can get the proper care. We all know it's the best place for him and Mum has done such a great job with him so far.

All the nursing staff cannot get over how well she has done with him.

You are right about sleeping and eating too, Mum and I are not eating properly. She has lost weight and me too, but I'm doing it deliberatately. I have been put on a Gluten free diet, so I have to watch everything at the moment.

One day at a time, is what we are doing.

Hi Chris,
What a dreadful time for you my thoughts are with you and your family. Your mum will be at a loss to know what to do and she will be lonely, on the brighter side she is very lucky to have such a loving daughter. It will be very hard to place him in a home but it really is the best place as the staff are trained to care for them. You will all be in my prayers. Hugs Sally

My heart aches for you as I have seen this scenario so many times & been through it myself also. As I read my heart ached for you. Unless someone has walked the path you are now walking they cannot begin to understand the pain & heartache you & your family are now experiencing. God knows & he will see you through it. Your mum will need all the support you can give for this is worse than seeing them laid to rest. God Bless & keep you & I shall continue to pray for you all./Lillian

Miss Lilian, you hit the nail right on the head!!

I want to thank you for praying for us all. It is the hardest thing seeing a parent or friend going through this.

Mum has been stoic, but breaks down every now and then. We had to get some sleeping tablets for her yesterday as she is not getting enough sleep. We are all in limbo mode - not eating at the right time and odd meal times. I am sure you know what we are going through with you being an ex-nurse.

I'm just about to ring the Nursing Home that has been recommended and see if we can get out there today.

I reallly really appreciate everyone's prayers.

Trevor said he'd help out in case we have to do some more "nursing home shopping"..

Dad was lucid on Saturday but yesterday he was semi-comatose (that's the only word I can think of). I mean his eyes open but he doesn't recognise anyone or anything. It's very distressing - but all I can say is thank God for ALL YOU NURSES!!!!

God bless each and everyone of you.

Dear All,

I took this picture today of Dad - we bought him some strawberries and he eat one. As we arrived he was holding the newspaper in his hand but had no idea what to do with it!

Mum was telling him that the Crows had won on Saturday - his favourite football team (Australian Rules.

As I left Mum this afternoon she hugged me and began to cry and thanked me for all I was doing - I told her not to cry and then I started. I got in the car and came home and unpacked all the groceries that we had done together.

As you can see Dad is very frail and is in a restraint - so as not to hurt himself or others. Very upsetting to see him like this. I do hope something can be done with the drugs he's on.

Hi Deanna,

Thanks so much for your comments. I've told Mum I have a lot of women and men praying for us on here. She is just hanging in there.

I lost it again tonight - he just doesn't even know us - he looks so frail and distant. I kept having to go out of the ward to stop crying.

Thank God my sister got to see him before he got like this.

Love Chris

I am so sorry to hear this! He looks so frail. Yesterday we spent the day with my dad who will be 98 on the 7th of October. His short term memory is not what it used to be and I was shocked he did not remember it was my brother's birthday; he has to use his diary for every appointment we make and at times uses his bad memory to avoid doing things he does not like. And it's deteriorating fairly steadily now.
But that's nothing compared to what you are experiencing with your dad.
I hope and pray you and your mother will be strong enough to come through this. Here's a big hug for you.

Thanks so much Martine - WOW! what a marvellous age for your father. My great aunt died last month at the age of 98 and she unfortunately had Alzheimer's at the end.

Thanks for taking to the time to write to me. Love Chris

Thanks so much Marjorie I really appreciate everyone's prayers and thoughts. It's just sometimes I cry for no apparent reason. I am consoled fairly quickly though and I know that it is God working his purpose out. Love Chris

I feel so sorry for you and your family and most especially for your mum. What a terrible decision she's had to make. I'd imagine it's probably been very wearing on her, so hopefully, when someone else is doing the major looking-after tasks, she'll be able to recover a little and feel better that he's in the place he needs to be. She has put in a valiant effort, as have you all, I'm certain. Hoping for the best outcome for you all.

Thanks so much Marianne - I keep thinking each day I go into see him he might recognise us - but it's just like he's looking right through us. All we can do is to let him know we are there and we love him, no matter what happens.

I really appreciate your comments about Mum, she has done an awesome job and especially over the past year. It's been getting worse and worse each day and to finally have to let go has been draining to say the least.

She has finally gone out today to the club she always goes to on a Wednesday (first time in 3 months!!!!), so as I write this (it's 2.20pm Wednesday afternoon) I hope she is having a good time.

Love and blessings Chris

My heart goes out to you, your mother and all the rest of the family. It is such a cruel disease, not only for the sufferer but for everyone who loves them. You have all done your best for him and should take comfort in that. All we can do now is pray.

Much love

Thanks so much Dianne, I've just been on the phone to our younger daughter Amy (she is the mother of Ophelie). She and Steve went into see Dad and were devastated - she couldn't get over how he has deteriorated in only a week.

We are just waiting to find a nursing home now - and hope and pray that he is not in any pain. Thanks for your concern.

Love Chris
