Thanks everyone who wrote me to suggest what to look for with my temperamental machine. Still don't know why the upper thread was breaking, but I did the same design on different fabric and it turned out great. Looks like I'll be using that to cover the almost finished one on my granddaughter's holiday stocking. She'll never know! LOL! But thanks to all. I did everything suggested and even ordered another plate for the machine.
