It is extra storage for PC files and programs. Depending on what you want to use it for. I have 2 of them both have my emb designs on them just in case one of them crashes. I also burn designs to discs for safe keeping.
You can buy them at any electronics store best buy, radio shack, etc. You can also find great deals for them online.

An external hard drive is a hard drive that connects to your computer through the USB port. Once it is plugged in your computer can use it just like an internal hard drive. Some of them come with automatic backup software so that they will automatically back up your files on your computer. They come in lots of different sizes but you should be able to get a 1 Terabyte for $100 or less on sale. They are available from a lot of stores. I usually watch for sales from newegg.com, staples, officemax, bestbuy, etc.

If you use your designs for a business you really want to back them up a few ways (hard drives, CDs and memory sticks are most used), I am using the memory stick ($10-$15 most anywhere) and next time I go to my son's house I am going to have him burn them to CD for me. My drive quit burning for some reason. I do not use mine for business, just my person enjoyment and gifts.

The cheapest way is probably to store on CD but an external hard drive is probably the better solution - although I did read from a Cutie this morning that her external hard drive was also not infallible!!!

Never a dumb question... I'm sure there are others that would want to know this. You have great answers too... I get my husband to do all that for me. I just let him know when I want to do a backup. Takes some time, but well worth it.

External drives are great for backing up everything on your PC. You can purchase them at Best Buy, WalMart, Target, Fry's electronics has the best prices. Office supply stores, anyplace that sells electronics.

I keep all my designs on a portable external hard drive i have a 500g one which is over half full.
One thing i have noticed
now that I have all my designs on the portable
it has freed up my pc ram and it boots up in a couple of mins and runs much faster..
I too regulary back up my external hard drive
but I use usb sticks.
also I can un plug my external hard drive which is also usb linked and move to another computer or my laptop and have all my designs with me :-)
also some new ones that u buy also offer free on line back ups
so worth looking at the different ones on offer
