I like it on fabric. You might try organdy to keep the lacy appearance.

The background filling of the FSL is very open and that causes the problems after rinsing. Only way to get the ornament nice and tight after rinsing the wss is the old-fashioned method our grandmothers used for open weave lace: baste it along the inside of the outline on a piece of cotton, then rinse both in water, let it dry and iron it from the back, then remove the basting stitches.

Try using Badgemaster stabilizer and don't rinse it so well.Badgemaster is thicker and if the design is very open like this I would use 2 layers. I use it and don't have any problems. Dry it on a plastic cutting board and shape it while it's drying.

When fsl was first being done, the threads held together, but some, like this one which I have done, are not very dense and do not hold the shape well. Try some from embroidery library, I really like them. But don't give up!

It's a shame you had problems with it. It's such a beautiful design and the ones you did on fabric look great. Wish I knew how to help you with the problem.

You may be rinsing out too much stablizer. I sometimes press mine between two pieces of cloth. Sometimes I pin it in place to the ironing board before pressing. It's a way of shaping it. I can remember way back when my mother had lace curtains. We had what they called stretchers that had pins all the way around the adjustable frame. We would place the edges on the pins and stretch it into shape and let it dry. I also remember a few pricked fingers!

Don't give up yet. You're not alone here with them turning out like this. I had several that did the exact thing. After seeing some of the suggestions, might try to salvage them.... These are stunning! You did a great job.... Keep at it.

I use fine netting for very open FSL, with WSS.

Carolyn these are beautiful . I use water saulable backing from wal Mart and Joanns fabric has it also and it works really well. I do not rinse it all out I just put it in warm water untill it is gone from around the design and I blot it on a paper towel and lay it out on freezer paper shiney side to dry.of course I shape them. you will love when you get the hand of it. Some times I use mylar on them you can buy that at the party store by the roll or order it from the net by the sheet.... Oh yes you can press it between 2 peices of pressing cloth and mske it lay flat

Carolyn they would be lovely on a red green or blue back ground light blue would be great with the blue thread.

Is that a FSL one in the centre? I think mabe you must shape it more carefully when you have washed it out. I find by using the loose hand held shower, and just spraying it from the top, lying it in the bath, and then turning it over and repeating, I keep the shape bette.
I think the others looks fantastic.

I will send you a link for a tip I use when doing Free standing |Lace designs.
I use Wonder Tape and Shelf Liner on my inner hoop and that holds the water soluble tight in the hoop when I stitch FSL and they all turn out.
Will put it in the next comment for you to have a look at.

Here is the link to Criswell K-|Lace Website that shows how to put Kitchen Shelf Liner with Wonder Tape on the bottom of your inner hoop.
This will hold your water soluble tight in the hoop while you stitch FSL.
Our hoops don't hold the water soluble very tight so this helps hold it.
If you have problems with the final outline satin stitches not stitching over the rest of the FSL design in the right place this will help.

The Wonder Tape is water soluble and you can find it in most machine dealer stores and also fabri, quilting and sewing stores in the Notions department.
Or you can do a seach and find it online.
The Kitchen Shelf line can be purchased at Walmart and even Dolloar stores and comes on a roll.
