have been able to just do what I call outline stitches or redwork designs. I would also like to learn how to make small applique designs. I have the basic embird now and I'm thinking about getting the extra plug-in for it.

It is fairly easy to do. You could buy a few of the lessons on the flying needle, those are great, comprehensive, very clear and are on one of the tools at a time.
