These files are associated with each embroidery file and really clutter the computer up, and, as they don't always show up they are difficult to get rid of. What are they and what do they do?

They are information files required by certain programs to reproduce the associated design correctly. (especially Pulse programs)
I haven't noticed anything detrimental when I have deleted them, other than the next time you access the design with that particular program, it will create them again anyway.
May as well just leave them.

Thank you Meganne - I also wondered what they were for. I also just delete them!!

Thank you for this nugget of technical information! The problem I've had is that, as they are mostly invisible, they remain on the memory card I use with my machine after I've deleted the embroidery design. This seems to slow down the reading of the card.

I usually delete them, didn't know what they were for and my memory card seems to work fine when I use any of the designs without having it.
