In the future how will I know if the design is upright like it should be?

If you mean the design is just upside down you can change that on your machine when you get ready to sew, I'm guessing your machine lets you rotate the design, I have the lowest end Brother machine and it lets me rotate. I'm sure there are programs out there that let you change also. I downloaded Wilcom TruSizer for free and it lets you change size, rotate, change formats, etc. I am computer slow so it took me a little while to figure out Wilcom but I got it.

Is that a Designs by Cuties?
Does your embroidery machine have a picture of what you are about to embroider? It should show the direction that the design is facing and you should have the ability to turn it. Some designs are put sideways or even diagonal to fit better in a hoop.
I've also downloaded designs that aren't even centered in the hoop or completely in the hoop area at all. (These are not always from the top quality digitzers.) I have to fix them before I sew.
Tell us what machine you are using and you should be able to get even more help.

I do not know which machine you have, but I would think
all brands would have the feature button to rotate a design to the correct position before stitching it out. After I choose a design to stitch, there is a image/layout screen that allows me to turn the design at 90 degree increments to position design in the right direction for the position I need it according to how I have the item/fabric positioned in my hoop. When you see the 90 degree symbol on the image/layout page, press "image" to show the design, the keep pressing repeatedly the "90 degree", until you see the design lined up in the direction you need to stitch it.
Hope this helps and I explained it sensibly. Maybe someone else will come along to help you better.

You must check each design that you want to sew.I'm Sure a lot have made this mistake, it even gets trickier when you are fighting with someting like a T-shirt (That goes inside upside and backwards)I find it foolproof if you pin a small paper marked to show where the design needs to be .
Unpin this just before stitching.
Sometimes it needs to be sideways to use the best size in your hoop,adjust the item/fabric to suit.
We all learn from our 'best' mistakes.the Idea is to not repeat the same mistake.
Be careful of Text if you ever mirror that.
