It's all to do with the day after thansgiving.

It is the biggest day of sales for the retailers here in the U.S. They say that it is the day in which they go from being in the "red" (from "loses"} to being in the Black (from economical gains). That is why there is a lot of competition in sales, to lure us, poor customers into their stores.

That was a good question to ask. I am 1 sshopper who does not get sucked into the votex of shopper's maddness.

It's crazy, it's insanity, the stores are so crowded with people trying to get bargains. Stores open at like 3 and 4 a.m.. People wait in lines outside to get one or 2 great prices, mostly electronics. Traffic is crazy too. I stay home!

Thankyou for that, I too was wondering what all the "Black Friday" bit was too. We, in Australia usually have that day on the day after Christmas (Boxing Day in some states is 26th Dec) Stores have to get rid of as much of the Xmas stock as they can as soon as they can. I have actually found these sales to be even lower if you wait a couple of days, unless you want to hit the stores with the rushes. Our stores don't usually open that early though. At the moment we have K Mart (like Wallmart I think) & our local one is open 24/7 days, it's only one of a few I know of doing it so far...
Anyway, I hope those of you that do venture out there get some good buys & it's worth it too.

Personally it is a very selfish time of the year... It's total madness, people grabbing things like they aren't going to find them anymore.(and they might not because of their selfishness). I refuse to give into such stupidity no matter how much cheaper everything is supposed to be. I've been in retail and know how things are priced and I'm telling you here in the US the majority of things are marked up 300% so they are still making money when they have such sales. If they would mark them appropriately the first time, they wouldn't be in the red so much, cause others would be able to afford them. (can you tell I'm getting upset just by discussing this, so I'll stop.) Hope you have a wonderful day.

Thank you for explaining this ,at least with Boxing day sales they usually don't start until 9am & a lot of people are still sleeping off Christmas so only the real bargain hunters are about.<br />I suppose Black Friday gives you a chance of saving money on Christmas presents .<br />The real silliness of Boxing day sales, seems to be sales of summer clothes so the shops can get in the winter gear when it doesn't start to get cold until the end of May , summer is only starting up at Christmas.

i read through the answers and i think i found the answer.. abt going from red to black on the accounts book hehehe. What a name!
