I would like to stitch this on paper. Does anyone know how/if I can reduce the density of the stitches?

Only way to do that is in your software, asnd the method is different for different brands. What have you got?

It looks to be redwork with a double run of stitches and should stitch fine if you use a good stabilizer on the back. A firm cutaway would be my suggestion. Do a trial run and see if you like the results. I love doing cards.
