yes - i think there must be some rule of thumb or something - so that it does not feel too stiff.

A customiser is not a digitiser. If you try to digitise with the customiser you have no control over the type of stitches, how many stitches and the amount of jump stitches in the design. The design will always be too dense, especially for a T-shirt.

customizer does allow you to change the density of the stitch, as well as the lenght and direction.

I just don't know what i want that density to be...

unfortunately, i have found that while there are tricks to minizing jump stitches, i.e. the order in which you enter the areas to be stitched, i cannot eliminate them.

I'm not sure there is an easy answer to this. I can only suggest you test stitch the design on to a similar piece of scrap fabric and decide from that. I hate to waste the stabiliser and thread but it really is the only way to know if the density needs altering. Sorry but .....

just for anyone reading. what i am finding is that it does a pretty good job automatically, there is a certain amount of thread needed to sufficiently "fill" the area, if you do much less it looks sparse, and the background color starts to show through too much.

Quite a bit of the stiffness of course comes from the stabilizer--but i need that....guess if i had more time and money i would go with lighter cut-away and some water soluble, i really need to find a cheaper way to buy the wss...
