When I refer to "fix", my machine(Designer SE)has an option where I can stitch a basting stitch around the hoop area. This allows me to stablize the fabric without having to hoop, and also allows me to use less stablizer when I can piece the added piece to the hooped stabilzer. Does anyone else use this option? So glad you asked.

As long as you secure around all edges, an away from the stitch area. I have done that with towels.
