Just wanted to share with you all: I made my own thread nets.
I purchased 1/2 yd stretchy netting, and folding it onto itself i overlocked a side seam straight down the length until i had used it all up, then i cut each long length into 3" pieces. It made 100 thread nets for only $11 AUD (under $10 US) and only 1/4 the cost of buying ready mades. As you can see by the photo they will even hold metallic thread securely and they have the added advantage that you can leave them on while sewing. I was frightened by the nightmare story one of my other group friends told, of a lose thread being sucked into her machine through the hand wheel and it caused her machine to seize, which burnt out the motor and wrecked the computer. Meganne, thank you for this wonderful tip. My what a horror story. I will be much more careful, I do use a net, something that I picked up from a florest friend of mine. I use them on all my spools. A flower for you.

This is what I really like to see...someone coming up with a better way to do something. I really don't like the net material because my thread still gets caught on with it think is a very caustic material.

There were so many different types of net available, this netting is a very soft one, not at all scratchy, and i made sure the stretch is across the width not the length. They work so well it doesn't even matter if you have the stitched seam on the inside or the outside. flowers to all. cheers, Meganne

This is a wonderful idea but where do you buy the netting you use. I have not seen stretchy netting in the stores? Flowers to you for a great tip.

In Australia we still have some haberdashery stores that specialise in materials and crafts, if you have those where you live, go to the netting section and look for soft netting. Pick the kind that, if you pull on it diagonally it will stretch but it is lovely and soft, and fairly closely woven, don't buy the stiff kind. hope this helps, hnr, M

I once had the dangling end of a cone of bobbin thread sucked in by the hand wheel. Did not notice at all until the hand wheel flew off. Guess I was very lucky, I could just shove the stuff off the axle and push the hand wheel back on. From your story I now realize it could have been far worse than loosing a lot of bobbin thread.

Thank you so much for your info. I am using the Hugo tape but it is such a pain taking it off and replacing it so often. It really gets to be a pain. First trip into town I shall be buying the netting. Can't wait to get stared on them.You area sanity saver if not a life saver....LOL

Great idea. I was wanting to do something but had not looked into it. This will make it possible to leave the netting on the spools especially those you use ofter.

So Meg, how is the netting holding up - after this length of time - is it stretching out at all or loosing it's shape?

No, doesn't lose its tension because I don't have to change from spool to spool. Mind you, I haven't had a machine to use so my threads are just sitting waiting to be used. One thing i advise is to leave the stitched seam on the outside otherwise it can make the thread feed a bit jerky.

My problem is i change the netting (purchased ones) from one spool to another and find that it doesn't stay firm and actually looses its shape and therefore doesn't keep the cotton tension right. I came up with the netting plus a piece of velcro applied around top of spol over the netting, this seems to work for me. You know i have only been having thread tension problems this past 6 months, and only on some thread. Nver had to use netting etc before. Maybe i need a service. LOL to u and thanks for the tip

I bought mine at a material store, not Spotlight, but Spotlight should have it too. it's just soft stretchy netting, not the stiff kind.

A great idea ! My granddaughter loves to put my thread nets on her arms for bracelets.........so my nets are all stretched too much. She knows NOT to do that anymore ! I hope I can find the stretch netting. WalMart, maybe ?

The netting I used is very soft and one way stretch.
I leave them on my spools, all the time, as it prevents unravelling, especially the Rayon threads. So far none of the nets have stretched and they are still holding firm even on spools where I am almost to the end of the thread.

Great idea! I thought the net was for the bobbins. Couldn't figure out what purpose it served since they were loose. I just thought it was to keep your bobbins together. HEHEHE. All of you Cuties are just great. Flowers to U

Meganne what a lovely I dea I do have some spools of thread that has to have a cover you sew with it or it all falls down the spool and puddles at the bottom it is a real shiney thread that was purchased form a factory that went out of bussiness it was used on little girls dresses.

That was a great idea for your thread nests, I just wanted to pass on to all the ladies, the netting that is around garlic works wonderful too. It is free, but you only get enough at one time to make 3... and no sewing. So for anyone who buys garlic in the netting, it is a great idea.

Great idea.....I got a ton of nets from a florist, some flowers are shipped with the little nets on them to protect the blooms. She just gave them to me and they work wonderfully. Worth it to ask?
