I had problems also finding the right size candy canes. I opted to enlarge the pattern slightly. Right now you probably will not find them. At Christmas time I found the largest selection at Walmart. Welcome to Cute.

In the UK they are half price in Tesco until they have all gone.

I made both of these and after the first ones I found out the canes couldn't go through the loops. So when I made more of them I started a little above the mark where you start and that made the loop large enough to put the cans through. I hope you can understand what I did and hope this helps.
