Do you really want to digitise or just be able to combine designs, add lettering, re-size and so on? I'd advise Embird, Basic plus FontEngine and Iconiser too. It's a great program and very cheap compared with others. And you can download a 30 day trial.
You can always add Studio (the digitising part) later. Digitising requires practice, and a lot of it, especially if you want to make quality designs. And it's addictive - you'll spend lots of time away from your embroidery machine when you take up digitising.
